New Delhi, Aug 4: Shibu Soren, the veteran leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former chief minister of Jharkhand, passed away on the morning of August 4, in Delhi. He was 81 years old.

Soren had been receiving treatment at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for over a month. His health deteriorated in recent days, culminating in his demise at 8:56?a.m. due to a prolonged kidney-related illness.

His son, Hemant Soren—currently serving as Jharkhand’s chief minister—announced the news on social media platform X, expressing profound grief and saying, “Beloved Dishom Guruji has left us. Today, I have become empty.” The term ‘Dishom Guru’, meaning revered leader, was commonly used to refer to Shibu Soren.

As a founding patron and long-time leader of the JMM, Shibu Soren played a pivotal role in the formation of Jharkhand as a separate state. He served multiple terms as CHIEF MINISTER and represented Jharkhand in both houses of Parliament. His political career spanned decades, during which he championed tribal rights and social justice.

His passing marks the end of a significant era in Jharkhand’s political history, and has sent ripples of sorrow across the tribal communities he fought for, the JMM, and beyond.
