Udupi, Aug 13: As part of the eighth anniversary celebrations of Niranthar Udyavara—founded seven years ago to promote art and literature—a three-day ‘Niranthar Film Festival’ featuring three award-winning Kannada films with strong social messages concluded successfully.
At the valedictory function, chief guest Fr Charles Menezes, parish priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi, said Niranthar has been creating public awareness through socially committed films. While such films may draw smaller audiences, those who attend are more receptive to their messages, he said, commending the organisers for the courage to screen them.

Daijiworld founder and actor Walter Nandalike, speaking on the occasion, noted that mental depression is rising not only in India but worldwide, affecting all age groups. Many fall prey to suicide due to depression. While the entertainment industry spends crores to provide amusement, socially conscious films can bring change in individuals and society, he said.
On the second day, social activist Muneer Katipalla and journalist Naveen Soorinje participated as chief guests.
On this occasion, doctorate awardee Dr Joyline Noronha, and socially committed filmmakers Mansore and Utsav were felicitated. Thinker K Phaniraj and members of Niranthar were present on stage.
President of Niranthar Udyavara Roshan Crasta welcomed the gathering, secretary Oliveira Mathias proposed the vote of thanks, and founding president Steven Colaco compered the programme.
Over the three days, renowned director Mansore’s films ACT 1978 and 19.20.21, along with the short film Photo directed by Utsav Gonawar, were screened.
