Kaup, Sep 20: A tragic drowning incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at Mattu Beach near Katpadi, where a college student from Manipal lost his life while swimming in the sea with friends.

The deceased has been identified as Veerurulkar (18), a native of Madhya Pradesh and a student at a college in Manipal.

As per initial reports, a group of six students had arrived at Mattu beach for recreation. While swimming, they were reportedly warned by locals about the strong currents and advised not to go too far into the sea. However, the warnings appear to have been ignored.

Despite swift intervention by local youths, including Aryan and Praveen, who attempted to rescue the group, one student could not be saved and was pulled under by the current.

The Kaup police visited the spot and registered a case.

Further investigation is underway.
