Ponda, Oct 23: The untimely demise of Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik has left a significant political vacuum in the Ponda Assembly constituency, with a by-election looming on the horizon. Naik, who had dominated the constituency for nearly four decades, built his influence through hard work, grassroots connect, and personal rapport with voters, rather than inheritance.
The spotlight is now on his sons, Ritesh and Roy Naik, as questions arise over whether they can carry forward their father’s legacy. Critics argue that unlike their father, they were born into political privilege and may lack the organizational acumen and voter connect that made Ravi Naik a formidable presence.

On the BJP side, the possibility of fielding Ritesh Naik has sparked debate. Party insiders are weighing his candidacy against Dr. Ketan Bhatikar, who narrowly lost in the 2022 elections but has remained active in the field. Bhatikar’s consistent grassroots presence gives him a notable advantage over candidates relying primarily on legacy.
The Congress is expected to field Rajesh Verenkar, though his preparedness for the intense contest remains uncertain.
Internal BJP dynamics add further complexity. Naik, originally a long-time rival, joined the party in 2021, leaving traditional BJP loyalists hoping for a local cadre leader to be given the ticket. Emerging BJP leader Apurv Dalvi, known for his municipal experience, youth appeal, and party loyalty, has been mentioned as a potential contender who could strengthen the party’s anti-“family raj” stance.
BJP strategists recall past experiences, such as the Mathany Saldanha by-election, where fielding the minister’s widow initially secured a win but ultimately led to a loss in the next election, underscoring the risks of relying solely on legacy.
The upcoming Ponda by-election is shaping up as a crucial test of political legacy versus merit and grassroots connect, with the results likely influencing the political landscape ahead of 2027.
