Puttur, Nov 21: A married man who allegedly died by suicide in Edkidu of Bantwal taluk has raised concerns after his daughter filed a complaint expressing suspicion over the nature of his death.
The deceased has been identified as Harish (55), a resident of Edkidu. Based on a complaint filed by his daughter, who suspects foul play in her father’s death, a case has been registered at the Puttur Town police station.

According to police, Harish attempted suicide at home. Though he was immediately rushed to the hospital, doctors declared him dead on arrival. Initially, an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) was registered at the Vittal police station. However, later in the evening, Harish’s daughter approached the police expressing doubts about the cause of his death and filed a formal complaint.
In her complaint, the daughter stated: "My father was running a vehicle painting garage on APMC Road in Puttur. The person running a neighbouring garage had assaulted him and was giving him constant mental harassment. It is due to this harassment that he may have died."
Harish, who worked as a painter, reportedly shared the building with another worker, Hemant Acharya, who was engaged in welding work.
According to the complaint, Hemant had been verbally abusing Harish without reason and mentally harassing him for nearly a month. A few days ago, he allegedly assaulted Harish and even threatened him with a sword. Harish had informed his daughter about these incidents, stating that he was deeply distressed by the harassment.
Based on the complaint lodged by Harish’s daughter, Puttur Town police have registered a case under Crime No. 112/2025, Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The daughter alleges that continued harassment and physical assault by the accused drove her father to take his own life.
Police confirmed that the earlier UDR case registered at the Vittal police station concerning Harish’s unnatural death will now be transferred to the Puttur Town police station for further investigation, in accordance with procedure following the daughter's complaint.
