Udupi, Dec 14: As part of a major crackdown on illegal sand mining and quarrying, Udupi district police have set up 29 check posts across the district. Police personnel have been deployed round the clock in day and night shifts to inspect vehicles transporting sand, red stone, building stone and M-sand.

Since December 6, a total of 3,966 vehicles have been inspected. During the checks, 11 vehicles were found transporting materials without valid permits and without paying the mandatory government royalty, prompting police action.

In the Manipal police station limits, one vehicle involved in illegal sand transportation was seized, and a case was registered against the driver and the vehicle owner. The remaining 10 vehicles were seized under mahazar and reported to the Udupi Mines and Geology Department for further proceedings.

Based on the report, the Mines and Geology Department imposed fines amounting to Rs 3,08,710 on the registered owners of the vehicles. Police officials stated that such enforcement drives will continue to curb illegal transportation and safeguard government revenue.
