Mangaluru: Fishing boat with seven on board sinks near Murudeshwara

Mangaluru, Dec 22: A fishing boat named Maisha-2, which had ventured into the sea for fishing from the Mangaluru fishing harbour, sank near Murudeshwar in the early hours of Saturday, Dec 20.

The boat belongs to Mohammed Shareek Ul Islam, a resident of Azizuddin Road near the city harbour. It had set out from the fishing harbour on Dec 16 with six fishermen and a driver named Vavil, a native of Andhra Pradesh.

The incident occurred around 3.15 am when the boat was engaged in fishing about 14 nautical miles off the Murudeshwar coast. The vessel reportedly capsized after being hit by strong sea waves.

Fishermen from another boat rushed to the spot and rescued all those on board the sinking vessel. All seven were brought safely to shore.

A case has been registered at the Murudeshwar police station in connection with the incident. The boat owner has stated in the complaint that losses to the tune of about Rs 60 lac were incurred.
