Intruder targets JD Vance’s Ohio home, Vice President says family was away

Washington, Jna 5: US Vice President JD Vance said on Monday that his family was not at home when an intruder allegedly attempted to force his way into their Ohio residence, expressing gratitude to the US Secret Service and Cincinnati police for their rapid response. Local authorities have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the incident.

In a message posted on social media, Vance acknowledged public concern and described the incident as an attempted break-in in which the suspect tried to smash windows with a hammer. He said the family had already returned to Washington, DC, and no one was harmed. Thanking security personnel and local law enforcement, he credited their swift action with containing the situation.

The Vice President also appealed to the media to exercise restraint, particularly in circulating images of the damaged house. He said protecting his children from the harsh realities of public life was a priority and questioned the public interest served by repeatedly showing photos of the vandalised residence.

According to local broadcaster WCPO 9 Cincinnati, Cincinnati police and US Secret Service officers responded shortly after midnight to reports of damage at Vance’s Cincinnati-area home. The suspect was identified as William DeFoor, 26, who was taken into custody and booked on multiple charges, including criminal damage, criminal trespass, obstructing official business, and felony vandalism.

Investigators allege that the man damaged several windows at the residence and also vandalised a vehicle belonging to the Secret Service. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the suspect smashing four windows, while Secret Service agents observed him on the property. Officers from both agencies conducted a search of the area in the early morning hours, with visible damage documented at the scene.

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s chief of communications, told local media that the suspect is currently being held on local charges, though federal charges may also be considered. He said the individual is being questioned by Secret Service agents and that the agency will forward its findings to the US Attorney’s Office for a decision on possible federal prosecution.

Law enforcement officials said agents heard a loud noise around midnight and discovered that a window had been broken, apparently in an attempt to gain entry. Authorities believe the suspect did not succeed in entering the home. No injuries were reported, and the residence was unoccupied at the time.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Secret Service personnel alerted city police after noticing suspicious activity, leading to a coordinated response and arrest. Police presence remained in the East Walnut Hills neighbourhood for several hours as officers secured the property and recorded evidence.

The Secret Service provides protective coverage for the Vice President, his immediate family and designated residences, working in close coordination with state and local law enforcement. JD Vance, a former US senator from Ohio, took office as Vice President earlier this year, and any security incident involving senior officials is reviewed jointly by federal and local authorities once investigations conclude.
