Udupi, Jan 6: As Shiroor Paryaya 2026 draws closer, Udupi is witnessing extensive preparations, transforming the temple town into a centre of devotion and celebration. From freshly lime-painted buildings to illuminated streets and traditional decorations, the city is gearing up to welcome thousands of devotees.
Lime painting work is progressing rapidly across major mutts, associated buildings, and key locations in the city. Important areas such as temple premises, entrances, guest houses, and traditional corridors are being given a fresh coat, creating a clean and bright appearance. Many of these structures receive lime painting only during the Paryaya period, making the occasion special and visually striking.

Across Udupi, main entrances, junctions, and processional routes are being decorated with traditional designs and festival-themed artwork. Symbolic welcome motifs, arches, and banners are being installed to greet devotees arriving from different parts of the country. Roads leading to the temple town are also being cleaned and prepared to ensure smooth movement during the festivities.
Special attention is being given to lighting arrangements. Decorative lights are being installed on temple towers, gateways, streets, and important buildings. At night, Udupi is expected to glow with colourful illumination, enhancing the festive atmosphere and highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage.
Preparations for the Brahma Ratha (chariot), one of the major highlights of the annual festival, are in full swing. The massive wooden chariot is being built using traditional methods and materials, reflecting centuries-old craftsmanship. The ratha, weighing several tonnes, is designed to move smoothly during the procession with the help of strong ropes and carefully planned steering.
The chariot features intricate carvings, decorative elements, flags, and a grand dome structure, making it a visual attraction for devotees. Every detail is being crafted with care to ensure both safety and traditional elegance during the procession.
Along with the Brahma Ratha, arrangements are underway for related rituals and processions. Routes are being prepared, safety measures reviewed, and space allocated to accommodate the large crowds expected during the celebrations.
