Udupi mandates speed governors for tippers carrying mines and minerals

Udupi, Jan 7: In a significant move to curb over-speeding and enhance road safety, the Road Safety Authority has made the installation of speed governors mandatory for all six-wheeler and larger vehicles transporting mines and minerals within Udupi district.

As per the decision taken at the recent Road Safety Authority meeting, the speed governors must be set with a maximum speed limit of 60 kmph. The issue of tippers and heavy vehicles exceeding speed limits was a key agenda point during the meeting, following which the new rule was finalised.

Superintendent of Police of Udupi district Hariram Shankar said the authority has granted a grace period of 10 days for all lorry owners and drivers to comply with the regulation. “Pamphlets explaining the decision and guidelines will be distributed to lorry drivers in the coming days to ensure wide awareness,” he added.

In a related development, January 20 has been fixed as the deadline for the installation of emergency doors in buses. After this date, buses operating without exit doors will face strict action, including penalties and possible seizure.

    It should be applied to private buses .they still continue to use pressure horns.For short time they were monitored.Their rash driving and honking is frightening.

    Many trucks don't have lights in the rear side and running in the night time ,which is very dangerous to the vehicles coming from behind. Yellow Beacon light should be made compulsory at front top side and rear side of the heavy trucks along with functioning of rear lights properly.

    These truck drivers with load or without load are speeding and overtaking like maniacs it's scary on road when in opposite direction a speeding big trucks and medium tata trucks come like they gona crush you. I have been signalling on everyday basis to slow down but these idiots don't even see school premises or intersection they drive like they are riding bike. Most of these trucks speed 80km and above on single roads. People have no civic sense nowadays no humanity also as I see on roads.If you remind anyone it's a school or speed breaker or no overtaking zone they act like they are going to kill you. They overtake and blink head light and speed at you on a no overtaking road as if they want to crush you no fear of law at all.

    Please ensure that these trucks including the trucks from the other states drive on the left lane and not on the right side of the lane. These trucks create a lot of issues on NH 66.

    A humble request to the authorities, please make the lorries and tippers to cover their cargo completely while transporting. A lot of cargo vehicles carry sand, gravel, clay, etc without covering (some even load to the brim) and keep spilling on the road. Some tippers don't offload their cargo completely and return for the next trip, by dropping the remaining sand, gravel, clay on the road. The vehicles who drive behind them get damaged by the falling gravel, drivers and passengers of the vehicles who follow them get their eyes hurt by falling mud and sand. It's a common sight every day or night that many heavy vehicles don't have tail and break lights.

    Appreciate the decision , also have the speed limit installed in all buses, express buses and also the buses going to different cities. Their are so many barricades placed in mid of the highway with no reflectors.

    Why can't the authorities stop plying of heavy vehicles on the busy highways carrying goods during the peak hours ( 8:00- 10:00AM and 4:00-7:00PM) of the day as they choke the smooth vehicular movements and a major safety hazards. Many of they carry flammable liquids as well as compressed gas. This is practiced everywhere in other countries. Can we care a bit for human lives?
