New Delhi, Jan 23: The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were announced on Thursday, with filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s vampire drama Sinners emerging as the biggest frontrunner. The film has created history by securing a record 16 Oscar nominations, the highest ever for a single movie.
Sinners has been nominated across major categories including Best Picture, Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Best Leading Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku and Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo. The film also earned nominations for Best Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Original Score by Ludwig Göransson, Original Song ‘I Lied To You’, Costume Design by Ruth E. Carter, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, Visual Effects and Casting.

With this achievement, Sinners has surpassed the long-standing record held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016), each of which had previously received the highest number of nominations.
Meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer One Battle After Another followed closely with 13 nominations. Films such as Marty Supreme, Frankenstein and Sentimental Value received nine nominations each, while Hamnet secured eight nods.
Written, produced and directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners is set in the Mississippi Delta of 1932 and features Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as the Smokestack Twins, Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore. The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Delroy Lindo and debutant Miles Caton.
Released in theatres on April 18, 2025, the film was made on an estimated budget of USD 90–100 million and went on to collect USD 368.3 million at the global box office, further cementing its critical and commercial success.
