Mangaluru, Jan 23: Mangaluru has been named the safest city in India in the recently released Numbeo Safety Index 2026, ranking 46th globally with a safety score of 74.4 among 304 cities evaluated worldwide. Qingdao in China secured the top position globally with a safety score of 89.2, according to the survey-based index released in January 2026.

The Numbeo Safety Index, compiled by the crowd-sourced global database Numbeo, measures city-level perceptions of safety and crime based on user responses. Participants rate factors such as feeling safe walking alone at night, incidents of violent and property crime, and overall personal safety. The responses are then analysed and converted into a score ranging from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating greater perceived safety.

Among Indian cities, Ahmedabad in Gujarat ranked second with a safety score of 68.5 (global rank 87), followed by Jaipur in Rajasthan (65.3), Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu (62.0) and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala (61.0).

The 2026 index highlights regional variations in urban safety perceptions, with Middle Eastern cities such as Abu Dhabi (UAE), Doha (Qatar) and Sharjah (UAE) also featuring among the top global performers. India as a country stood 70th globally in overall safety, with an overall safety score of 55.8.

The rankings reflect public perceptions of safety and are used for comparative urban studies, travel planning and benchmarking city livability.
