Mangaluru, Jan 29: A woman pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car while walking along the roadside near Karnad Kokkarakal on National Highway 66.
The deceased has been identified as Vanaja Purushotham Poojary (59), a resident of Markanja, Chitrapu. The incident occurred when Vanaja was walking towards the milk society near Kokkarakal along with Jacintha Machado, when a car hit them. After the collision, the car rammed into the iron safety barricade on the roadside and came to a halt.

Due to the impact of the accident, Vanaja was thrown away and sustained serious injuries, leading to her death on the spot. Jacintha Machado sustained injuries but escaped with her life in what was described as a miraculous escape.
Vanaja is survived by her husband and son.
Mangaluru North traffic police inspector Shivakumar, Mulki police personnel and officials from the national highways department visited the spot and conducted an inspection. The car driver has been taken into custody and a case has been registered in connection with the incident.
