Mangaluru, Jan 29: A press interaction held on Thursday, January 29, at Vivanta Hotel on Old Port Road here highlighted emerging opportunities for business, trade, education, and professional collaboration under the proposed UK–India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

The visit focused on strengthening economic and educational ties between Karnataka and the United Kingdom, with special emphasis on positioning Mangaluru as a key hub for future collaboration. Addressing the media, representatives explained how the trade agreement could help local enterprises expand their global footprint while fostering deeper academic partnerships.

A major highlight of the discussion was the potential for iconic Mangalurean brands to enter international markets, particularly the UK. Well-known names such as Naturals Ice Cream, Hangyo, and Ideal Ice Cream, along with traditional delicacies like Mangalore buns, were cited as examples of local products with strong global appeal. The initiative aims to promote regional brands and introduce authentic Mangaluru flavours to cities such as London.

On the education front, the delegation highlighted the growing presence of British educational institutions in India. Universities such as the University of Southampton, which has established a presence in Delhi, along with Liverpool and Lancaster universities setting up campuses in Bengaluru, were cited as key examples. The delegation expressed interest in facilitating similar collaborations in Mangaluru, including the establishment of UK-based schools, higher education institutions, and research centres in the region.

Speaking on trade and professional mobility, UK representatives noted that while the current trade negotiations do not primarily focus on the movement of professionals, Indian students and skilled workers continue to play a vital role in the UK economy and academic ecosystem. They reaffirmed that the UK remains open to Indian talent through existing immigration and education pathways, ensuring a continued exchange of skills and knowledge.

Although no specific projects have been finalised, the delegation conveyed a clear intent to actively promote Mangaluru to the UK business community as a city with strong potential for investment, innovation, and international collaboration.

The press meet concluded with optimism that the UK–India trade agreement would serve as a catalyst for long-term economic growth, educational advancement, and global exposure for Mangaluru and the wider coastal Karnataka region.
