Infant’s gift of life: Kerala’s youngest organ donor leaves legacy of hope

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 13: In a deeply moving act of generosity amid overwhelming grief, a 10-month-old baby girl from Kerala has become the youngest organ donor in the state’s history, offering a second chance at life to other children.

Alin Sherin Abraham, from Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district, was declared brain dead after suffering critical injuries in a road accident. In the face of unimaginable loss, her parents made the courageous decision to donate her organs so that others might live — a choice that has resonated across Kerala.

The infant’s kidneys, liver and heart valves are being donated. Her two kidneys will be transplanted into a 10-year-old child undergoing treatment at the S.A.T. Hospital attached to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The organs are being transported by road to ensure that transplantation procedures are carried out without delay.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George expressed profound sorrow over the child’s death while lauding the parents’ extraordinary resolve. She said their decision to think beyond personal tragedy and offer life to others reflected immense courage and compassion. The minister also assured that the state government stands firmly with the bereaved family.

Describing the act as a powerful reminder of the importance of organ donation, Veena George noted that while no words can ease the pain of losing a child, the knowledge that Alin Sherin’s organs will help save other young lives may bring some comfort. She said the family’s gesture stands as a beacon of hope and humanity, turning a moment of darkness into an enduring legacy of life.
