Mumbai, Feb 14: Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra, son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, passed away in Mumbai on Friday. He was 84. The Sagar family, in an official statement, described him as “a man of warmth, dignity, and values” who touched many lives with his kindness and gentle spirit.
The statement said that Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra died peacefully on February 13, 2026. As part of the second generation managing Sagar Arts, he carried forward the creative legacy of his father, the creator of the iconic 1987 television series Ramayan.

His last rites were held on Friday at the Hindu Smashan Bhumi (Pavan Hans) in Mumbai at 4.30 pm. Filmmaker Ramesh Sippy and actor Bhagyashree were among those who attended the funeral to pay their respects.
Anand was one of five children of Ramanand and Leelavati Sagar and played a key role in the functioning of Sagar Arts. He directed and produced several projects, including the 2008 remake of Ramayan, and was associated with popular television shows such as Alif Laila. He also contributed to the film Armaan, known for its hit song “Ramba Ho Ho Ho,” which was recently recreated for the Ranveer Singh-starrer Durandhar.
Anand was also among the co-producers of the original Ramayan serial (1987–1988), written and directed by Ramanand Sagar. The series featured Arun Govil, Dipika Chikhlia, Sunil Lahri, Arvind Trivedi and Dara Singh in lead roles, and was based on ancient Indian epics.
He is survived by his wife Nisha Sagar, sons Shakti Sagar and Amar Sagar, daughter Gauri Sagar, daughter-in-law Vaishali Sagar, and grandchildren Aanya Sagar and Arjun Sagar.
Last year, his brother Prem Sagar also passed away in Mumbai after a brief illness, marking another loss for the Sagar family.
