Mangaluru: Father Muller plastic surgery team saves NRI’s forearm after severe chemical burns

Media Release

Mangaluru, Feb 17: The plastic surgery team at Father Muller Medical College Hospital, successfully treated and restored the forearm of a 58-year-old NRI patient who suffered severe chemical burns following an accidental sulphuric acid spillage at his workplace in Dubai.

The patient presented with deep, extensive forearm injuries requiring urgent and specialized care. The plastic surgery department undertook a series of advanced, staged procedures including repeated surgical debridements, VAC (vacuum-assisted closure) dressings, and definitive skin grafting to salvage the limb and regain functional use.

The patient expressed deep gratitude to the institution and the entire medical team for the dedicated, timely, and compassionate care received.

The plastic surgery team included professors and consultant plastic surgeons Dr Aravind L Rao and Dr Satish Bhat, along with Dr Akanksha Rajpoot and Dr Karthik Aithal, supported by residents Dr Manasa (MCh), Dr Ragavi (MCh), Dr Chetna (MCh), and Dr Aheesh (MS).

The procedures were carried out with strong anaesthesia support from Dr Vishma (associate professor), Dr Karthik (assistant professor), Dr Synol, Dr Amit, and the department of anaesthesia residents, ensuring safe and effective perioperative care.

The plastic surgery department also manages the Father Muller Rotary Skin Bank, which provides preserved donor skin for patients with major burns and traumatic skin loss. Such donations significantly improve healing outcomes and remain a lifeline for those with severe burn injuries.
