Udupi: Malpe police arrest one for assaulting fish trader, snatching Rs 6 lac gold necklace

Udupi, Feb 21: Malpe police have apprehended a suspect in connection with a brazen attack on a fish trader at Malpe harbour, where the victim was assaulted and his gold necklace snatched.

The arrested, identified as Muthanna (20), originally from Kanakagiri taluk, Koppal district and currently residing in a rented house near Malpe Lake, was found in possession of the snatched gold necklace weighing 37.570 grams.

According to police, in the early hours of February 20, an unidentified man approached fish trader Dayanand Kundar under the pretext of enquiring about fish and threw chemical powder into his face. Subsequently, two accomplices allegedly brandished a knife and demanded the gold necklace he was wearing.

When Kundar refused, Muthanna and the two others allegedly struck him on the face and back and forcibly snatched the necklace, valued at approximately Rs 6 lac, equivalent to six sovereigns of gold. The incident was immediately reported to Malpe police station.

The investigation was conducted under the guidance of Udupi DySP Belliappa and Malpe circle police inspector Ramachandra Nayak, with Malpe police sub-inspector Eeranna Shirgumpi leading the operation. Officers including S E Hussain, Adarsha, and Basavaraj Haidri successfully arrested the accused on the night of Feb 20, and he has since been produced before the court.
