New Delhi, Feb 26: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday filed a chargesheet against Kannada actress Ranya Rao and two of her associates in connection with a high-profile gold smuggling and money laundering case.

According to the ED, approximately 127.287 kg of foreign-origin gold, valued at Rs 102.55 crore, was smuggled into India between March 2024 and March 2025. The agency alleged that the gold was distributed in the domestic market, and the proceeds were laundered through hawala channels and various bank accounts to project the illegal earnings as legitimate business income.

The investigation was initiated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following a CBI case, which was originally based on a complaint filed by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

Ranya Rao was arrested by DRI officials on March 3, 2025, upon her arrival at Kempegowda International Airport from Dubai. During the interception, officials seized 14.213 kg of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore from her possession. Subsequent search operations led to the recovery of additional gold jewellery valued at Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash.

The ED investigation has resulted in the provisional attachment of immovable properties worth Rs 34.12 crore registered in the name of the actress.

The probe further revealed an organized and structured mechanism involving the purchase of gold abroad, its illicit smuggling into India, cash sales, and the subsequent illegal transfer of proceeds through hawala and banking routes.

The ED stated that such activities not only undermine legitimate trade and financial systems but also erode public trust in institutions meant to regulate cross-border transactions.
