Udupi, Mar 27: Nestled in the heart of Manipal, the serene Manipal lake, popularly known as Mannapalla, has steadily emerged as one of the most picturesque and refreshing public spaces in the region. Surrounded by lush greenery and calm waters, the freshwater lake offers a perfect blend of nature, recreation, and wellness, making it a favoured destination for residents and visitors alike.

Spread across a 1.9-kilometre walking track, Manipal lake provides an ideal setting for morning and evening walks, jogging, and relaxation. The tranquil environment, accompanied by chirping birds and cool breezes, makes it especially attractive for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. During sunrise and sunset, the lake transforms into a scenic paradise, drawing photographers and fitness lovers.

In recent times, Manipal lake has gained further attention with the introduction of boating activities, especially during the monsoon season when the water level rises and enhances its charm. The presence of migratory birds during this period adds to its ecological significance, attracting wildlife enthusiasts and visitors seeking a peaceful retreat from urban life.

Despite its natural beauty and growing footfall, Manipal lake remains an underdeveloped asset in the district’s tourism landscape. Given that Udupi is already recognised as a prominent tourist destination, the development of Manipal lake could significantly boost local tourism.

There is currently no comparable urban recreational space within Udupi city, making Mannapalla a unique opportunity for authorities to create a model eco-tourism and leisure destination. With proper planning and infrastructure, the lake could attract not only locals but also tourists visiting nearby religious and coastal attractions.

The district administration is urged to take special interest in enhancing the lake’s surroundings and facilities. While the city municipality is commendably managing waste collection, certain key areas require immediate attention, such as regular cleaning of the walking track—a large number of dry leaves accumulate on the pathway, making it slippery and inconvenient for walkers. Appointing a dedicated track cleaner would ensure cleanliness and safety. Consistent maintenance of street lamps along the track is essential for the safety of visitors, especially during early mornings and evenings. Authorities can take inspiration from Kadri Park, a well-developed urban park. Introducing features such as a mini toy train track along the walking path, landscaped gardens and seating zones, designated bird-watching points, and improved signage and information boards about biodiversity would greatly enhance the visitor experience and make the lake more family-friendly.

Manipal lake has already become a vital public space where people gather for exercise, relaxation, and social interaction. Its calm atmosphere makes it one of the best spots for walking, particularly during early mornings and evenings. Authorities must ensure that wastewater from nearby buildings does not enter the lake, preserving its ecological balance. During summer, the water level drops significantly, and sustainable measures must be implemented to maintain consistent water levels throughout the year. Several access points lack proper maintenance, with some pathways blocked by overgrown bushes and unused stairways. The lake includes an open stage, seating arrangements, and a badminton court currently covered with dry leaves. With proper cleaning and maintenance, it can serve as a venue for cultural, community, and sports events. Additionally, expanding water sports activities with proper safety measures can attract adventure seekers while ensuring the protection of natural habitats and migratory birds.

However, its transformation into a landmark destination depends not only on administrative efforts but also on public responsibility. While the development and maintenance of such spaces lie with authorities, preserving their cleanliness and ecological balance is a duty shared by citizens.

With thoughtful planning, sustained maintenance, and innovative additions, Mannapalla has the potential to evolve into a landmark destination in coastal Karnataka—a place that seamlessly balances ecology, recreation, and tourism. As urbanisation continues to expand, protecting and enhancing natural assets like Manipal Lake is crucial. By investing in infrastructure, conservation, and visitor-friendly amenities, authorities can ensure that this scenic lake remains a green lung for the community while also emerging as a major tourism attraction that reflects the beauty and vibrancy of Udupi district.
