Mumbai, Mar 29: Vijaypat Singhania, former chairman of the Raymond Group and a distinguished industrialist, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 87 on Saturday, March 28.
Announcing the demise, his son and current Raymond Group chairman and managing director, Gautam Singhania, expressed deep grief, describing his father as a “visionary leader, philanthropist, and an inspiring personality whose legacy will continue to guide generations.”

Born on October 4, 1938, Vijaypat Singhania took charge of the Raymond Group in 1980 and played a pivotal role in transforming the company into one of India’s most trusted and globally recognized brands in men’s fashion. Under his leadership, the group witnessed remarkable growth and consolidation.
Apart from his contributions to the textile industry, Singhania was a passionate aviator. He achieved global recognition by setting a world record for the highest altitude attained in a hot air balloon, reflecting his adventurous spirit and determination. In recognition of his contributions to industry and society, he was honored with the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2006.
Singhania served as the chairman of the Raymond Group for two decades before stepping down in 2000, handing over the leadership to his son, Gautam Singhania. While the father-son duo had been involved in a prolonged legal dispute since 2015, the matter was resolved with a reconciliation in early 2024.
Vijaypat Singhania is survived by his wife Ashadevi Singhania and children Madhupati Singhania, Shephali Ruia, and Gautam Singhania. His last rites will be held at the Chandanwadi crematorium in Mumbai on Sunday, March 29 afternoon.
