Udupi, Mar 30: The long-awaited Santhekatte underpass, the construction of which began nearly three years ago, was finally opened to the public on Monday, March 30, bringing much-needed relief to commuters in the region.

The ambitious infrastructure project, which commenced with a foundation stone-laying ceremony on January 12, 2023, faced multiple delays and was completed only recently, drawing sharp criticism from the public and stakeholders alike. The prolonged construction significantly impacted daily commuters and local businesses, particularly those situated on the left side of the road towards Udupi, where reduced accessibility led to a decline in footfall and substantial financial losses for traders.

In addition to economic setbacks, the execution of the project led to several accidents, frequent traffic congestion, and numerous commuting challenges, intensifying public frustration. Notably, Daijiworld.com had consistently highlighted these concerns through a series of persistent reports over the past few years.

Frustration had also grown over the slow pace of work, with allegations directed at previous members of parliament, officials, and elected representatives for their inability to expedite the project. Despite the setbacks, the underpass and flyover have now been made operational, with Udupi MP Kota Srinivas Poojary facilitating the opening for vehicular movement.

Speaking on the occasion, MP Kota Srinivas Poojary acknowledged that the public's concerns were valid. He explained that although the project began in early 2023, it faced technical difficulties, such as encountering large rock formations during excavation. Legal hurdles also arose when nearby residents approached the court, fearing damage to their buildings due to rock blasting. He stated that consistent pressure was applied to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and concerned officials to ensure completion. While minor works are still pending, the flyover has been opened to ease traffic congestion ahead of the monsoon season.

MP Kota Srinivas Poojary added that a formal inauguration will be conducted later in the presence of MLA Yashpal Suvarna and other dignitaries. He expressed gratitude to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, officials, public representatives, and citizens for their cooperation.

The opening of the Santhekatte underpass is expected to significantly improve traffic flow on the busy stretch and restore normalcy for local businesses.
