Friends, family, Konkani cinema and diaspora pay emotional tribute to Ron London

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 31: A sombre yet celebratory atmosphere filled the MCC Bank Hall on Monday, March 30, as the Konkani film fraternity, community leaders, and family members gathered to honour the life and legacy of Ronald Blany Rodrigues, widely known as Ron London. The multifaceted actor, producer, and philanthropist passed away on March 27 at a hospital in London at the age of 67, following a courageous battle with cancer. The condolence meet commenced with a floral tribute to his portrait, followed by an outpouring of heartfelt stories from those who knew him best, remembering him not only as a powerhouse of regional cinema but also as a man whose quiet generosity transformed lives across both the Mangalurean diaspora and his native soil.

Walter Nandalike, founder of Daijiworld Pvt Ltd, delivered an emotional address reflecting on a fifteen-year friendship that began during the production of the film ‘Ek Aslyar Ek Na’. He described Ron as a frequent visitor to his home and office, who eventually played the role of his father in the film ‘Bapache Putache Navim’. Nandalike particularly highlighted Ron’s silent philanthropy, noting that he sponsored the education of five to ten underprivileged students annually without any fanfare. In a moving commitment to his late friend’s legacy, Nandalike assured the gathering that he, along with Ron’s relatives and associates, would ensure these charitable missions continue.

Stany Alvares, president of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, lauded Ron’s professional conduct and soft-spoken nature. Having shared the screen with him in multiple projects, Alvares described him as a highly disciplined individual who could adapt seamlessly to any filming environment. He noted that while death is an unavoidable part of life, the Konkani world has lost one of its finest artists and most dedicated supporters of the arts. This sentiment was echoed by director Stany Bela, who provided a detailed account of Ron’s prolific three-decade career, ranging from his 1992 Hindi debut in ‘Jab Dil Hai Toot Gaya’ to his recent acclaim as 'Jemma' in the 2025 Konkani feature ‘Bapache Putache Navim’.

Ron’s impact was deeply felt through his social leadership in the United Kingdom and his significant 2021 contribution of Rs 25 lac towards constructing houses for underprivileged families in Balpa village. Even as he underwent treatment throughout late 2024, his passion for cinema never wavered, as he remained active in the post-production of his final projects. While the community mourns his departure, his presence will be felt once more on the big screen with the release of his final Hindi film, ‘Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai’, scheduled for June 2026. The tribute meet concluded with reflections from Pius Rodrigues Bantwal and Jeevan Vas Kulshekar, with Leena Rodrigues rendering the vote of thanks for a man whose life perfectly bridged the worlds of art and altruism.
