Mangaluru, Apr 2: City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that if police personnel remain constantly aware of their duty, it is possible to control crime and illegal activities.

He was speaking at the Karnataka State Police Flag and Welfare Day programme held here on Thursday, organized by Mangaluru City Police, Dakshina Kannada District Police, Special Task Force unit, and KSRP 7th Battalion Mangaluru unit.

He stressed that police personnel must develop exemplary character in society and take responsibility to ensure that no untoward incidents occur. In case such incidents do take place, they should be prepared to face them. He added that the department must function in a way that instils fear among those involved in criminal activities, and officers should have confidence in their ability to apprehend offenders.

Reddy also noted that compared to other states, Karnataka police department has been provided with adequate facilities and that significant improvements have been made in the system.

Retired inspector Mohan Kottari, who was the chief guest, said that it is essential for police personnel to have proper knowledge of ground-level laws. He emphasized that knowledge of the local language is equally important and that officers must carry out their duties without succumbing to political pressure.

He warned that problems, if not addressed at an early stage, tend to grow into larger issues, and illegal activities can disturb law and order. Referring to recent developments in Dakshina Kannada district, he said that curbing cockfighting was a commendable move. He pointed out that many families had suffered due to cockfighting conducted in the name of tradition and religion, with youth neglecting work and ruining their lives. He added that after the crackdown, women’s gold jewellery has become safer, as the practice of pledging ornaments and losing money due to cockfighting has reduced.

A total of 49 retired and voluntarily retired police personnel were felicitated on the occasion.

Bantwal subdivision ASP S Kumar Sharma, DCPs Mithun and Ravishankar, additional SP Anil Kumar Boomereddy, and KSRP 7th battalion commandant Hemanth Kumar were present.
