Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 18: Rising ultraviolet radiation levels have prompted the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority to issue alerts across several parts of Kerala, warning residents to limit exposure to direct sunlight.
Six districts—Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kollam, and Palakkad—have been placed under an orange alert after recording a UV index of 8, considered high enough to pose health risks.
Specific locations flagged include Kottarakkara, Konni, Chengannur, Changanassery, Munnar, and Thrithala.

Authorities cautioned that prolonged exposure in these areas could lead to sunburn, skin conditions, and eye-related problems. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for parts of Ernakulam (Kalamassery), Thrissur (Ollur), and Malappuram (Ponnani), where the UV index has reached 7.
Districts such as Kozhikode and Wayanad reported slightly lower levels at 6, but officials stressed that precautions remain necessary statewide.
The KSDMA highlighted that UV radiation peaks between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., advising people to avoid outdoor activities during these hours. Vulnerable groups—including outdoor workers, fishermen, tourists, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions—have been urged to take extra care.
Recommended precautions include wearing protective clothing, using hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses, and seeking shade whenever possible. Experts also noted that UV exposure can be intensified in tropical and high-altitude regions, and even on clear days, reflective surfaces like water and sand can amplify harmful radiation.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to stay informed and follow safety guidelines to minimize health risks.
