Youth in Sanguem region take road safety into their own hands with reflective tape drive

Sanguem, May 10: In the Sanguem region, a group of young volunteers from Curchorem and nearby areas has launched a grassroots road safety initiative aimed at reducing nighttime accidents on key road stretches connecting Curchorem, Quepem, and Sanguem.

Led by social worker Dattaraj Raut Dessai, the effort was initiated in response to growing concerns about frequent accidents and poor visibility at hazardous locations, particularly during monsoon conditions and after dark.

As part of the drive, the volunteers identified accident-prone zones such as sharp bends, culverts, roadside barricades, and poorly lit stretches where motorists often struggle to navigate safely. Reflective radium tapes were then installed on dividers, roadside structures, and other vulnerable points to enhance visibility for drivers at night.

The initiative is intended to serve as an immediate, low-cost safety measure while highlighting the need for better long-term infrastructure improvements such as proper street lighting and warning signage. According to the volunteers, the reflective markers are expected to help alert motorists in advance and reduce the risk of collisions on dark stretches of road.

Local residents have welcomed the effort, praising the youth for stepping in to address a pressing public safety concern. Many have noted that such community-driven actions play a meaningful role in raising awareness about road safety and preventing avoidable accidents.

The volunteers have also urged motorists to remain cautious while driving through these stretches and to cooperate in maintaining the visibility markers installed along the route.
