St Aloysius School of Engineering hosts ‘UNBOXING AI 2.0’ workshop on ethical AI in research

Mangaluru, May 14: The School of Engineering, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), in association with the Father Muller Research Center, organized a one-day workshop titled “UNBOXING AI 2.0 – A hands-on workshop for medical professionals” on May 13, at Joseph Willy Hall, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru. The workshop witnessed the participation of around 40 participants comprising faculty members, researchers, and professionals from Father Muller Research Center, Kanachur Medical College, and St Aloysius (Deemed to be University).

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Dr Praveen Martis SJ, vice chancellor, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University). Addressing the gathering, he remarked that the world is moving towards Education 5.0, which signifies a transition from mere digitisation to the humanization of technologies. He emphasized that while AI technologies are transforming education and research, the role of human intelligence and ethical responsibility cannot be undermined. He noted that workshops such as UNBOXING AI 2.0 not only introduce emerging AI tools but also instill awareness regarding their responsible and ethical use.

The chief guest, Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, director, Father Muller Charitable Institutions, stressed the need for the judicious use of Artificial Intelligence and highlighted that the human factor should never be lost amidst technological advancements. Dr Ramesh Bhat M, head of Father Muller Research Center and guest of honour, urged participants to ensure that AI complements rather than replaces human intelligence. He emphasized that critical thinking and human reasoning can never be substituted by technology. Dr S Ruban welcomed the gathering, while Dr Glenson Toney compered the inaugural ceremony. Dr Geetha proposed the vote of thanks.

The inaugural session was followed by a series of technical sessions focusing on the role of AI in research and innovation. Dr S Ruban delivered the first session titled “The research mindset: Beginning the journey of innovation.” Dr Glenson Toney conducted the second session on “From search to synthesis: AI for literature reviews,” where participants were introduced to responsible and effective use of AI tools for academic literature review and research writing. The final session, “Researchathon: Smart research workflows using AI tools,” was handled by Mohammed Siraj B, who demonstrated practical AI-driven research workflows and productivity tools.

The workshop provided participants with hands-on exposure to emerging AI tools while strongly emphasizing ethical practices, responsible AI adoption, and the importance of preserving human creativity and critical thinking in research.
