Mangaluru, Jun 11: Centre for Ethics (CFE), Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) conducted the 15th edition of the popular five-day nation-wide Intensive Summer Workshop on Ethics and Research (I-SWEAR 2026) from June 2 to 6. Vice chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) Dr KS Gangadhara Somayaji, inaugurated the workshop. Prof Dr Aswini Dutt, registrar, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) and Prof Dr Prakash Saldanha, principal and dean, Yenepoya Medical College, Prof Dr Amar Jesani - editor, Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, Prof Dr Vibhuti Patel - Retired professor emeritus, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, also graced the occasion. Their valuable perspectives enriched the event and inspired the participants. Following the opening ceremony, a sapling was planted as a symbol of our ongoing sustainability efforts by the vice-chancellor, Dr Gangadhara Somayaji in the campus.

The workshop aims to transfer knowledge and skills in research ethics to researchers and ethics committee members to enable them to develop a sense of ethical responsibility towards research.

CFE has established itself as a leader in advancing ethical discourse, training, and governance and is recognized internationally as a center for research ethics and clinical ethics training.

Focusing on empowering workshop participants who are engaged in research or are serving on institutional ethics committees or are likely to serve in future, Training sessions included Fundamentals of research ethics, ICMR guidelines, NDCT rules, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and specific research ethics topics like genetic and stem cell research, public health and social science, technology and AI in research, Medical devices and AYUSH, and also animal research The workshop was designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world application and involved local and external experts as faculty members Dr Amar Jesani, an independent bioethics consultant and chief editor, Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, Dr Arun Bhatt, consultant and joint editor-in-chief of Perspectives in Clinical Research. and Prof Mala Ramanathan, retired professor Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum were the national faculty. The in-house faculty included Dr Vina Vaswani, director, CFE, Dr Ravi Vaswani, professor internal medicine & faculty, CFE, Dr Uma Kulkarni, professor, ophthalmology & faculty, CFE, Dr Poonam Naik, professor community medicine, Dr Pooja Harish, reader Dept of orthodontics, Dr Megha Rani, professor department of pharmacology, Aarti Halwai, tutor CFE, and Akuma Ifeanyichukwu, SRF CFE.

As many as 39 participants from within the University and outside, from various disciplines successfully completed the workshop.

Centre for Ethics is now initiating the First in India Masters in Research Ethics (MSc RE) hybrid programme aimed at strengthening research through training in embedded ethics and regulatory practices. This unique interdisciplinary program aims to offer training in research ethics, public health ethics, clinical and animal ethics, AI & technology ethics, regulatory frameworks, and global guidelines, preparing graduates for careers in ethics committees (EC/IRBs), academia, clinical ethics consultation, NGOs, and global health networks.
