Turkiye calls for Palestinian state, says peace needs justice

Istanbul, Jun 29: Turkiye’s Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus has said that ending what he described as the expansionist policies of Israel’s far-right government would not only bring peace to Palestinians but also help stabilise the wider region.

Speaking at the opening of a NATO summit in Istanbul, Kurtulmus said lasting peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without justice for the Palestinian people after decades of conflict and Israeli actions in Palestinian territories.

“The end of these acts of aggression by the Israeli government would not only allow Palestinians to attain peace and tranquillity, but would also mean securing world peace,” he said.

Kurtulmus reiterated Turkiye’s support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, stating that a two-state solution remains the only path forward.

“There is no other way forward than a two-state solution,” he said.

He also referred to the recent interim agreement between Iran and the United States, expressing hope that the development would lead beyond a temporary ceasefire towards a lasting and fair peace settlement.

“We hope that they will ultimately lead to a lasting and just peace, not merely a ceasefire but a genuine peace settlement,” Kurtulmus added.
