Beltangady, Jul 23: The Karnataka Forest Department has introduced new rules for trekkers by updating its online booking system, including changes to advance reservations and refund policies aimed at curbing misuse of trekking slots.

Under the revised guidelines, trekking slots can now be booked up to 30 days in advance, instead of the earlier 15-day booking window.

The department has also revised its cancellation policy. Earlier, trekkers who cancelled their booking at least seven days before the scheduled trek were eligible for a 100% refund. Under the new rules, only 50% of the booking amount will be refunded if the cancellation is made at least seven days before the trek. No refund will be provided for cancellations made within seven days of the scheduled trekking date.

The Forest Department has also made it mandatory for trekkers to carry the original identity proof used during online booking while reporting for the trek.

All trekking bookings and payments must be made only through the department's Aranya Vihara website, the department said.

Officials said the changes were introduced after some agents allegedly misused the earlier 100% refund facility by booking large numbers of trekking slots in advance and later reselling them at higher prices close to the trekking date.

To prevent such malpractices, the department has withdrawn the full refund provision. It has also clarified that any trekking slot vacated after cancellation will not be reopened for fresh bookings under the new system.
