Seoul, Aug 21: The child star who appeared in the record-breaking ‘Baby Shark Dance’ video has embarked on a new musical journey, releasing his first K-pop digital single nearly a decade after gaining worldwide fame.

Park Geonroung, who featured in the viral video at the age of seven, has made his solo K-pop debut under the stage name ‘Baby Shark Boy’. He is backed by Pinkfong Company, which owns the copyright to the ‘Baby Shark’ franchise.

“Baby Shark Dance brought joy to people around the world, and I’m very grateful that so many people still remember me from 10 years ago,” Park said, expressing his desire to reconnect with audiences through music.

The ‘Baby Shark Dance’, released in 2016, has become the most-watched video in YouTube history, crossing 17.2 billion views. The song's popularity has extended well beyond YouTube, with the catchy tune being played at the White House and drawing praise from US President Donald Trump, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and several other celebrities.

The song has also inspired numerous parodies and sparked a global dance trend.

Following his appearance in the original video, Park continued his association with Pinkfong and appeared in several of the company's other shows.

His debut digital single, ‘WAVE’, begins with the familiar ‘Baby Shark’ melody before transitioning into an electropop sound. Park also contributed lyrics to the track.

Park described ‘WAVE’ as the beginning of a longer musical journey rather than a one-time project. He said he hopes to explore different aspects of his personality through music as well as other forms of content.

The release marks a fresh chapter for the former child star, who shot to international fame as part of one of the world's most recognisable children's music sensations.
