Mangalore, Jun 26: "It is my earnest desire to see a drug-free society. The letter of oath is not for name’s sake but has to be taken seriously by the students," said Seemanth Kumar Singh, commissioner of police, DK district, at a programme held to observe 'International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking' at Rosario Church Hall here on Tuesday June 26.
The programme was organized by the department of psychiatry, KS Hegde Charitable Hospital, in association with Link Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts.
After officiating the oath to the gathering, Singh said, "It’s easy to fall into the trap of addiction. However, coming out of it is not that easy, even if the addict wants to. Moreover, it’s our combined responsibility as members of the society to see that no one gets into this habit," he continued.
In addition, Singh said that there are many rehabilitation centers, hospitals, and NGOs working for their welfare thus helping the addicts come back to a normal life.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Satheesh Rao, professor of psychiatry, said that addiction to drugs starts out of curiosity and peer pressure. Presently, the addiction has reached even high school and PU students. Advising the students not to start the habit, he added that addiction is at the root of all the problems and complications.
Asha Nayak, president, child welfare committee, DK district, too addressed the students and advised them to lead a drug-free life. Dr Arun Rao, chief psychiatrist, Wenlock Hospital, shared the dais.
Prior to the stage programme, a play by ‘Jagan Power’ team was presented narrating the consequences of falling prey to drugs at a young age.
