Record 257.44 mn Tonne Food Production Expected in 2011-12

New Delhi, Jul 17 (IANS): India is bracing for a record 257.44 million-tonne food grain production during 2011-12, officials said, giving credit to the second green revolution for the upcoming bumper harvest.

The fresh estimate is five million tonnes more than the April estimate which had suggested 252.56 million tonnes, the union agriculture ministry said Tuesday.

According to agriculture ministry officials, this year's high production was due to the scheme to push the second green revolution in the eastern region started in the 11th Five year plan (2007-12).

A break up of the latest advance estimate showed a record 104.32 million tonnes of rice in 2011-12 against 103.41 million tonnes in the April estimates.

Rice production in 2010-11 was 95.98 million tonnes.

Similarly, wheat production is expected to be up this year by nearly four million tonnes from 86.87 million tonnes last year to 93.90 million tonnes.

Pulses production is estimated to be high by nearly 2 lakh tonnes to 17.21 million tonnes in 2011-12 but it is lower than the 18.24 million tonnes achieved last year.
