Mangalore, Jul 25:
Konkodi Padmanabha, president of Campco Ltd, lamented the proposed ban on gutka, pan masala which will bring crores of areca nut growers in 12 districts of Karnataka and 5 districts of Kerala onto the streets.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday July 24, Padmanabha said that the state government is in consideration of high court order to ban gutka, pan masala, and other tobacco products and has also received a notice from the high court. However immediate ban on areca nut products will bring areca nut growers into loss.

The ban may also result in illegal trade in of areca nut products which is through inferior qualitative areca nut imports. He also questioned that when tobacco products like cigarettes are not banned, for what reason they are targeted on areca nut products.

He stated that in reality all the pan masala products have main ingredients of areca nut and not tobacco or nicotine. Same fact is printed in the sachet in caution column. The Supreme Court too has clearly mentioned the difference between pan masala and gutka. He urged that instead of imposing ban on gutka, the government should take measure to make mandatory cautioning of consuming tobacco in the sachet of gutka. Also a compensation package should be announced by the government in case it goes ahead with the ban of gutka. He added that a writ petition is yet to be filed in the the Karnataka high court urging to cancel the ban on gutka and in Kerala a writ petition has already been filed and an interim verdict is anticipated.

He said that a commission has already met CM Jagadeesh Shettar, food minister D N Jeevaraj, among others to explain them the bad impact on those who are depending on this crop.

Campco MD Suresh Bhandary, vice president of Campco Sathishchandra Bhandary, were present during the press meet.

Yes i agree that if gutka/pan masala is banned many people will be cut of their earnings. But if it is found and proved that it is harmful to life there is nothing wrong in banning it.
let there be some other product which will not harm life.
Didn't the government banned illicit liquor distillery was banned and there was no opposition.
Lakhs of people were unemployed as a result and mainly poor people who were earning little and many rich became richer.Dont there people survive today with more respect? with a better respectful alternate?
Let the aracnut association go for some alternate product with aracnut than relying on product which harms theit brorthren.

when arecanut growers laughed all the way to bank to encash crores of rupees did they think of paying taxes to the government. All the time they evaded tax in the name of being AGRICULTURISTS.Now when thier earnings are hit, they want compensation. Is there any justification? They should find an aletrnate way to market their produce.

I never heard this K.Padnabaha coming out and standing for the rights or fighting for better price for areca nut. now he knows he is going to be the loosed he is giving talks on areca growers difficulties. selfish to the core. the ban must be imposed imidietly. it has health hazards and in India no one cares for the health of people sepecially the poor. its only gain is in business and no ethics/morals

I am strongly in favor of a blanket ban on Gutkha with immediate effect has has been implement by Maharastra Govt. last week. This was done after a detailed study of the dangerous effects and highly addictive potential especially in the young!!

Just to serve the purpose of a few growers, the Govt. cannot sacrifice the safety of our young and productive population and put them at risk of dangerous diseases like CA!!

Will this fellow K Padmanabha, take the responsibility of cleaning, repainting, and bearing all the expenses of all the gutka and paan masala-stained government building walls, hospitals, public urinals and many private commericial complexes? Many a time, it is very difficult to clean those walls as the stains are difficult to remove and permananent marks are etched on the walls thanks to people spitting their paan especially on stairwells, toilets etc. If he is willing to pay for all this in the coastal districts, then let him be allowed to promote his business among the paan chewing people. Otherwise tell him to shut his gob, because he wants to save his business and nothing else.
