Mangalore's Hour of Shame : Rape and Loot - Is This Our 'Culture'?

Mangalore's Hour of Shame : Rape and Loot - Is This Our 'Culture'?

Walter Nandalike
Editor-in-chief

Mangalore, Jul 30:
Saturday July 28 indeed was a black day for Mangalore, as once again, the so-called 'moral police', without an iota of morals in themselves, treated women, the weaker section of the society like animals.

Certain truths revealed by the victims of the Morning Mist Home Stay incident and their friends cast a big question on the purpose of the attack.

"The attack was not in the name of 'protection of Indian culture', the purpose was loot and rape," said a close friend of a victim talking to daijiworld. Her voice was full of pain, she was sobbing and could hardly talk, but was brave enough to disclose the truth.

Images captured from video footage provided by a third party to Daijiworld

"One of the attackers touched my friend's body like a hungry dog, treating her like some object of play. I cannot explain...please understand what his real purpose was," she breaks down, unable to find words to describe her friend's trauma.

"I swear that it was not a rave party. We are not that kind of people. My friend had taken her parents' permission. Is this the way to treat people?"

"I will never attend any party in Mangalore...I do not want to go through what my friend experienced," she says.

When asked why her friend had not approched the police, she said, "We have explained the entire incident to them. My friend initially wanted to file a complaint of attempt to rape against the men, but that itself is another trauma which she is not willing to go through. She will have to run from pillar to post for several years to get justice, explain to each and everyone where they touched her, what they did etc...her name will be splashed across the media...the mental torture is just too much to handle, and even after all that, there's no guarantee that her tormentors will be punished. She just wants to put this incident behind her and move on."

Venu (name changed), one of the boys who was in the party accused the attackers of stealing a purse with cash, two gold chains, and a ring. "We started the party at 2.30 pm, and were planning to close at six as the girls had to leave early. Just as we were preparing to leave the place, a gang of around 40-50 confronted us. When we realised their intention, we tried to escape, but they blocked us from all sides...they treated us like animals," he said.

Another boy, Vivek (name changed) says, "We are all above 18 years, adults who know our limits. We were celebrating our friend's birthday, and did not violate any rules or norms. There were no loud speakers, but only a stereo which we hardly used. It is hard believe we are living in a free country."

"My advise to all party lovers is do not celebrate here. Mangalore is not a place to celebrate, go somewhere else if you really want to enjoy life, which is allowed under the rules of this country," he said.

"So far I had only heard about the Taliban, but now I came to know how Taliban behave, and what they really are."

"They not only beat me, but took away my mobile worth Rs 20,000, which my uncle had gifted me on graduating with good marks,"  he said.

There were 13 youngsters in all, including five girls. Some of them had just finished their graduation and others pursuing graduation in city's colleges.

Several organizations and intellectuals have condemned the inhuman attack on the boys and girls. Though everyone does not endorse the idea of youngsters partying at a resort, beating them black and blue has attracted intense outrage from people across the country.

Reliable sources told daijiworld that one of the girls is a daughter of a high-ranked Lokayukta police officer in Mangalore.

Image of Mangalore

In 2008 Mangalore's image received a heavy blow when miscreants threw stones at places of Christian worship, soon after on January 24, 2009 the pub attack created much hue and cry across the country. That too was an attack on young girls by fundamentalists opposing pub culture.

It took at least 2-3 years to come out from that trauma, rather, to rebuild back Mangalore's image.

But this incident has surely done irreparable damage to Mangalore once again.

"We wanted to spend a week in Mangalore. I heard Mangalore was peaceful and a wonderful place to stay. Today I changed my plans, and now we are going to Goa," a friend of mine, a native of Delhi and who is in Dubai, told me on phone last night. He had planned to spend a week here visiting famous temples, staying in a resort along with his wife and two teenage daughters.

This may be a small example, but several people are already having second thoughts about holidaying in Mangalore, or will do so in the future.

"Is investing in Mangalore still worth?" read an SMS I got from Abu Dhabi on the night of the incident, from a fellow Mangalorean friend who is investing lots in Mangalore real estate.

Can NGOs and women organization think differently from now on ?

Whenever there is an attack on women, the first thing we see is all the women-related organizations in the nation come on TV and start giving lectures, sit with discussion panels and condemn. After a few days, they forget everything.

Did these organizations really fight for the victims of 2009 pub attack? Did they get justice? If yes, then why the attack on women over and over again?

A girl is crying out 'attempt to rape', and in today's world she finds no way to address the issue. She cannot complain to the police because she cannot explain what these attackers did. She cannot go to the court, because she cannot wait for years to get justice. She is young, with her whole life in front of her, and for this reason, she cannot afford to lose her image, time, patience, and most of all, her dignity.

Women organizations must come together and think how justice can be done to girls who suffer the trauma of attempts to rape every day. Without disclosing their identity, can these girls get justice? Only women organizations can do this, if they think seriously and think differently.

Hope Mangalore does not suffer such incidents again. May Mangalore shine once more.

The city's administration is hurt too. This is not the time to blame them, instead we need to extend our support.

Seemanth Kumar Singh, an upright police officer should prove this time what Mangalore police are, and who 'Moral police' are.

Let us keep our faith in him, in this moment of crisis.

Good Read. Thank you editor. Let me tell you a analysis on the whole situation from my point of view. We all know, this has started a long back, which has gone unnoticed/ignored a lot of times. We must note that lot of Hindu
,educated hindu's in fact supported these thugs in the name of religion.
Everyone knows, minority communities where assaulted right left and centre in our district,
there has been so many incidents, needless to say. When the minority community
gave up, these thugs had no choice, started their attack on other minority community in the name of conversion and as usual the other
community gave up too. Now, these thugs have nowhere to go and are
jealous of the teenagers/people who enjoy life/success. These holigans have started attacking their own people, from their own community.
Now, lot of majority community has learnt the lesson and to those who
still support these morons, wait for some more time. Days are not too
far when they'l start attacking your daughters, sisters, mothers tresspassing your own home. Thats when you'l learn.
Not against anyone or any religion, just a ashamed citizen of Mangalore. Mangaloreans join hands and wipe out this evil, high time.
Human race is the first religion.

Those who praised this attack and other attacks on innocent boys, girls, women and men, are really perverted people. Actually they want to be there when such things happen so they can take some liberties and enjoy that moment. That is their HJV and other hindu groups culture. At home if they do that even with their own wives, they will be thrashed by the women folks. So these events gives them sadistic pleasure.
That is the VERY reason they support this kind of attacks.

Shocking incident.Where did exit our moral of the most cultured educated city. Actually I have no words to exlpain my heart felt feeling. Why these miscreants start some moral teaching? Do their parents teachers, Gurus and religious leaders teach such things? As far as I understand Illeterate ,ignorant and jobless people are hired for this work. At one stage we were boasting about our culture, but today we have bow our heads against this henious incidents. I hope a Good DC will take up the stern action and bring the culprits to the justice. But DC also what he will do? May be some culprits may be belongs to some currupt leaders? When Our entire sytems is under the curruption and vandalism who will bring justice at the presnet stage? But one proverb might come true"Every dog has it's own day".

India is supposed to be the largest democratic and very liberal country in the world, but it doesn`t appear anywhere to that if you look at what is happening in Mangalore. What sort of democracy and liberty anyway if one is not free to have some sort of party and celebrations in their own homes or friends circle?. The anti-social elements and thugs responsible for this cowardly act should be promptly rounded up and put behind bars, never to be let out till they are fully civilized and reformed.

I cannot find words strong enough to condemn the barbaric attack on young students in Mangalore. The shameless goons masquerading as champions of Indian 'culture' molested the girls, forcing them to remove their jakets and forced the boy to remove his shirt as well giving an initial impression to the TV viewers that something bad was happening there. Now the truth has come out on how the whole thing was stage managed by these goons in order to convey a false impression about what was happening in the resort. It was indeed a birthday party and no locals had complained about any 'rave' party as claimed by the goons.

The spineless rascals mercilessly beat up the boys and showed their 'powrusha' on the hapless girls. They gave an ample demonstration of the kind of 'culture' they claim to represent. These are rowdies pure and simple who are just utilizing their affiiation to this so called 'vedike' to fulfill their animal instincts. How can anyone even remotely considering themselves as protetors of culture even touch a woman in the wrong way. If these rogues want to show their bravery, let them fight alongside our jawans in Kashmir who put their lives on the line to protect the nation, rather than bash up innocent boys and girls. Of course it is too much to expect from these uncultured bandicoots, who in all probability must have gone to the nearest bar soon after the incident to tank up once again. When are we going to be rid of these culture vultures who feed on the defenceless? We must put aside our differences and demand strong action from the govt.

But if the track record of the present govt is anything to go by, nothing much can be expected from this paralysed govt, with ministers busy fighting each other to grab their share of the spoils to be made from 'governance'. The only way seems to be through legal means to force the govt to take action and teaching the present dispensation a lesson come next years elections.

The aftermath of the heinous act is seen by way of arrests, protests, agitations, comments /condemnation by thousands of readers as well as people of Karnataka.

I think it is proof enough for the Police and the Court to immediately punish those goons. When they are released from jail we would like to see them limping and seeking mercy from all those boys and girls whom they have thrashed. We are waiting for this news uploaded on websites soon.

India is spending billions of dollars to protect its citizens from external enemies but who is protecting its citizens from these internal enemies? Our impotent police force is wearing gloves in their hand when they handle this type of situation. In Karnataka they are just puppets of these communal groups. They were quick enough to arrest the boys and girls who partook in the party but they did not even lay their hands on these goons. Our public should send bangals to our police to wear.
India is a democratic country and her citizens have every right to do whatever they want to, as long as they are in their private places and don’t disturb peace. Who gave authority to these rowdies to barge into someone’s private place and beat the girls in the name of protecting the so-called culture? Our culture is to respect women and not to beat them. If these goons think that the boys and girls were involved in undesirable activities, it is purely their business, not ours. If they want to protect Indian culture, they should go to those brothels and stop prostitution. Looks like these guardians of Hinduism and its culture are used to beat their women folk and they just can’t resist from beating other women.
Ramasene is spoiling the image of Lord Rama. Majority of Hindus are ashamed of these hired rowdies who have nothing to do but disturb peace in our society.
Students, today a few of your fellow-students got beaten by the Ramasene but tomorrow there will be more and more IF you guys keep quiet. Would you keep quiet if your sisters are beaten by them? Keeping quiet is endorsing their action that would encourage them to do more. Instead of protesting against Ramasene, go after those culprits and pay them from the same coin. Let the female students protest. Believe me only you guys can teach those eunuchs a lesson.

I am a mother of three grown up girls. They all studied in Mangalore. After watching the videos together with my two daughters from different TV channels it is very difficult for us to come to the conclusion that students are innocent. The place they ed for the party, and the dress girls wear in the hotel room with the boys, beer and cigaret packets, and hiding their faces in front of the camera this all give doubt. If they had taken permission from their parents, and as per reports one of them is a police officers daughter, why they ran away? Most importantly why they hide their faces in front of the camera? Celebrating birthday party with friends is not a crime. And they are not children All of them grown up adults, and some of them finished their graduation. They know the law of India better than a common man. They ran away because even though some of them might take permission from their parents, something illegal was going on there.

When legal & police force could not give justice People started taking law into their hands started beating everyone they suspected.

I remember within few days our legal and police force became active & then they could catch the cuprits immediately from Thirtha halli/ Shimogga. (Thimma/Raghu/Diva may be I am correct with the names)

To make our system work in a proper direction I feel the city should awake once again to destroy these evils once for all, hit these buggers where ever you find them, make their life miserable, break their bones & legs. The moral policing should stop.

I wish some public groups will come forward to provide free legal and necessory support to eliminate these evils.

Intentions of the raid by the activists seem clear if one takes a look at the activist in a checkered shirt in the pictures. These are sexually starved beasts who in the pretext of moral policing vent their sexual hunger. There must certainly be provision in our constitution/ judiciary as to how to treat these ‘mad beasts’

There are lot birthday parties takes place in Manipal Campus, any moral police can dare to enter that campus? Why is it happening only in Mangalore why not in Bangalore? Bangalore known for pubs and parties. What is Indian Culture? Politicians like Renukacharya,Halappa, Kumaraswamy, ND Tiwari, JH Patel and lot of politicians known for illegal activities, are they protectors of Indian Culture? Why can't so called protectors of Indian culture do moral police on them. Why only on Students? Now where are those Institution managements who admit these students and never bothered to protect these students. It's the time for the students to arise and form the strong National Students Union that can give befitting answer to the corrupt leaders and its followers. Students of India...arise, your time has come to fight for your rights.

Well, while congratulating Mr. Walter for his brilliant journalism sense, I have got some real questions to our "Cultural Protectors"

You guys barked that the girls were wearing half naked clothes in the party and it was unacceptable. agreed. then why there was a protests from your groups when girls wear burkha/headscarfs?
Forget about Burkha/headscarfs, I want to know which one is a suitable, decent dress for girls to wear in Mangalore as per your group? Salwar Kameez/Chudidars?? but i want to remind you guys that Chudidar is a Mughal culture and Mughals were outsiders for you :p If you guys turn back the pages of history, Indian women were wearing the sarees without blouses!! So u guys want girls to wear those kind of clothes while going to colleges?? then you must be kidding or out of your mind.
Fine, at least you guys could have wore Lungis/Dhothis/Mundu with no shirts on while attacking those unarmed kids, we could have partially agreed your intentions.

Again, if somebody pulled your Dhothis and you were wearing underwear/briefs, that would have been western culture. but,KOMANA could have really saved you!! My question is simple, If girls wear jeans, t-shirts its against our culture. If you wear, then its fashion?? or don't like to wear Indian cultured clothes?? aren't you guys ashamed to call yourself as "cultural protectors''?
I want the big 'Vidwans/scholars' of these so called cultural protectors i.e. Mr. Rakesh Shetty, Mr. Vaikunt Vaidyanathan, Mr. Sudharshan Shetty, Mr. Ashok,Boddhu, Mr. Nagesh Nayak and Mr. Dinesh Poojary, Mr. Ravi Ullal to answer my questions. My narration may look funny but my intentions are real. I am waiting.

    Dear Editor,
I wholeheartedly support your concerns brought out by you, it is also time to look the other side of coin. Money and power can blind anyone. In this incident the goons had plenty of money n support for hidden hands, these partying youngsters also have good pocket money coming from their parents. How one uses money n power is an important question. Some work less and earn more some dont work at all, still money comes !! This is a fact. One way to remain safe from goons is to have party in the presence of elders. Other wise one has to fight goons with same scale. Love n peace wont work with these goons. Behind these goons are the real goons !! Now how will one can expect justice when hidden hands patronize such acts repeatedly ? Even police cant do much. To revolt against the mighty, one needs to mobilize mass. Nothing can stay in front of mass, even mighty goons. Anna Hazare in our times did it in case of corruption. Why can whole of Mangalore get together and plan a strategy to fight these hidden hands once for all?

Molesting young girls is unacceptable - let her be a prostitute. Culprits know the political n legal loopholes very well. They go on rampage under patronage from unseens hands. These goons cant do anything when some ministers caught red handed for indecent activities. I never head one protest organised by these fundamentalist organisations. So here we see the double standard through a simple example. They are hell-bent on some ideological issue. And intellectuals know about it very well, its not apt to discuss here too. At ground level we must work for safety of a girl or boy. Let the wrong deeds be addressed by their parents or through legal process.

Hight time to take these rogue elements head-on. They have done enough damage already to Mangalore. We donot want rules n regualtions from these rogue elements. We wil abide by law of the land, and if we are guilty of not obeying law,we wil bow our heads. Nw it is time to protest strongly

    Dear Walter,
Thanks for writing your editorial. Its high time someone takes this issue head on.
Long time ago in Mangalore there were isolated events of eve teasing especially by few loafers who would gather around a ‘katte’ and hang around there. They would be firmly dealt with responsible society people and hence was well contained. Eve teasing , molestation and rape are power games done by insecure people. They cannot bear success of others and the women are easy targets especially when they are vulnerable.

Dear Brothers & Sisters and Respected Parents,
“Rape & Loot is this our Culture”…. This question in fact you have to ask those who were engaged in Rave Party(Illegal Activity). The boys who joined in that party black mailing innocent Hindu Girls exploiting them.
Once police caught them, they are changing the topic and saying that it is birthday party. Nobodys parents/family would like this kind of involvement of their daughters in this kind of illegal/ Rape/Sexual/naked party.
Fortunately police caught them in the right time, otherwise they would have involved in Sex also, as it clearly indicates from their dressing style and cot/bed in the room .
Let us not politicize this issue. Many are supporting this party, I don’t know what is wrong in the modern generation, I think low mentality/uncultured family members only can support it.Because they also want suck kind of enjoyment. Remember that it is not Indian Culture.
After all nobody is denying you from taking drinks , go to some family restaurant’s (in many restaurant’s liquor is available) along with the family ( not with Kamuka friends) and enjoy, or take drinks at home it permitted.
People are only blaming HJV, but not the party gang which is very sad…..!!!???
In fact, one thing I would like to clarify… I am not against the enjoyment of girls ..enjoy. Be decent….these boys are using you….be careful…your parents are sending to school for studies and not for this kind of illegal /immoral/sexual activities…After marriage you do whatever you want we will not ask you……

But one thing is very clear , of course I would have appreciated HJV if they would not have hit those girls even though they were wrong. You should have caught them and handed over to police(but I know police are useless they also would have taken money from this party shameless Gang and released..what to do…), but unfortunately you have taken law into your hand ..which is not acceptable….

It’s shocking to see these developments in mangalore, a place famous for its reputed colleges, and cosmopolitan culture. There are many students from other states who wish to pursue their studies here. With the recent developments people will be scared even to travel to mangalore, our city needs investment as we don’t have many industries here, we need students to come to mlore for studies, when there is influx of people, development take place. I know these hooligans in mangalore, for eg: please visit any city bus stations in mlore, you will be shocked to see these moral police loitering there. They fear none, during the day they act like protectors of humanity and during the night they are in the bar, drinking an making merry. Ruthless, cowards, taking protection in the name of one or the other organizations. If this prevails mlore will be compared to other lawless city of India. You and I should wake up now, religion, caste, creed, rich and poor this is not the time to see these differences. If we want to fight this menace, we must stay united. Does death/misery/hardship differentiate anyone? no, we all face troubles in our lives, so we must believe GOD is ONE, and fight these anti-social elements, mushrooming in our city, if not our future generation will blame us for their misery. I love my mangalore, and all our people there. WAKE UP!

It is very very disturbing to see the pictures and the truth behind the scenes which was not shown on TV which most of the public don't know. It is very scary to have parties and enjoy life occasionally. You need to take permission from these hooligans? The dress code, food, drinks in our houses etc to be decided by these mentally cracked persons. Or else do we need some arrangements inside our houses or partying places for our security for eg. katthi suthi..donne etc. I think the second idea will be better in todays situation. Whatever happens will see later. What you say guys? Otherwise you in the forum suggest some alternatives.

The youth hadno right to touch the girls or hold the girls so tightly. In , a way we can see the boys (moral police) trying to touch the girls instead of safeguarding. them. It is nothing but politics. Someone must have given them money to forcibly enter the venue and slap the girls. Nobody has the right to take the law in their own hands.. For God's sake look at the videos and the pics again and again. Are we that blinded to see what is happening??? Mangalore has always been a peaceful and safe place for everyone.. We need to keep it that way. Everyone celebrates their birthdays and anniversaries and each one has the freedom to celebrate wherever they want. First of all the attack on pubs created a mess and now people have no right to party in their own houses... It wont be suprising if these people start barging into houses and hitting parents and children for celebrating birthdays...
When the children have taken permission from their parents, nobody has the right to interfere. even if they didnt their parents can handle their own children at home. Nobody has the right to hit anyone and publicly abuse them. I think instead of now protecting your children from getting into bad habits or influence we have to protect them from being molested in public.. Parents have to think twice before sending their cildren now even to their friend's house to celebrate birthdays. This is stupidity. Instead of talking about the character of these victims, we need to support them by fighting back against these losers. These are the same people who do what they want, whenever they want and try covering up their faults by blaming the victims and using media to create a tv show. If you do not stop them now, this will continue and our children will never be safe. Lets together make Mangalore the safe haven that it has always been for us and our children..

Do you take permission from HJV to do all this and what if they barge into your house and accuse you that you were having drinks with your friends in semi naked condition and trash the shit out of you, before commenting be aware that you or your family members can be their next VICTIM, they do not need any reason to attack anybody.(most of the men in coastal area only wear a lungi without shirt or t-shirt)

My question is if the activists intention was to protect Indian Culture then why are they hiding? Bring them to the public and let them confess the truth .
When the teachers of the law and the pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing
adultery to be stoned to death as per law,Jesus said to them "Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her.
" When they heard this they all left one by one.(John Chap.8.vs.2 to 11)
So, here is the true case of intentional attempt to rape and theft pre planned and to cover up the case
the media was brought along with.
If the intention was to save the Indian culture, the activists could have brought some clothes along with them and covered the half
    naked innocents and handed over
    to their parents rather than
practicing to pull out Draupadhis saree like dhushasana
The attackers has to be punished orelse a call will be given to all women organisations to join hands to fight for justice.

I could see that the number of comments didn't cross 25 till now. This clearly indicates that our people are more interested in commenting only on rape news, attack news, pub news etc in support of one or the other political party and blaming related organizations or party.

    Dear Readers,

After reading comments for all of u just want to highlight some facts.
    1. Lot of u are mentioning that it was a late night party, but read the entire article & it is clearly mentioned the party was about to end & they were getting ready to leave. However even if they were your children do u think his is the way to handle them. Easy to talk about other children but when it comes to ur children you will talk like a saint.
    2. To the victims of the incident, please do not pursue this case as for the next few days all of us will be supporting you after that it will be like "none of r business". eg: Pub incident of 2009, murder of kenan santos in mumbai 2010 and many other cases where the victim has to suffer for prolonged periods because of slow justice & in this case there will be no convictions as the case will be cited as lack of evidence though there were cameras. I understand you are upset & want to pursue this case at this point in time because of the anger & humiliation u have faced but on a long run I seriously doubt whether you will receive support other than some online sympathies.
    3. To the youth congress team, great work. Though you are a political party I salute you that you are taking action getting yourself arrested for the sake of these boys and girls. Good work cause I see a light at the end of the tunnel because of your effort. However keep at it and do not bow down under pressure.
    4. Evolution: for protectors of culture and for those who in some way think the party was wrong: here is my advise to you: We have evolved since centuries from ape to human and this is also of phase of evolution. By girls becoming modernized does not mean that u get the right to molest, rape or abuse women. Get to know your history there were days when even lesser clothes were worn by women & still respected in society. This party happened indoors by adults & in a private property with parents permission. what more do they need.

Police officers should understand that so called "Moral policing" is insult to them. When police force fails, so called moral policing emerges and continue their aggression without fear. There were so many incidents of aggression and attack from these so called moral police group during fast 3-4 years. I have not read if anybody of these groups are seriously furnished or if any serious warning was issued against them.

This gives a licence to them to do what they want to do. If any groups wants to fight against injustice or evils in the society, they have to fight and put pressure on Government or city administration. If everybody becomes moral police and takes law in their hand, then we cannot say we are living in democratic country and there is no point in celebrating Independence Day. Can City administration issue a strict warning now to these so called moral police groups. This warning has to be published through media and a complaint line has to be established if anybody come across such so called moral policing. Walty, your last sentence is straight forward "Seemanth Kumar Singh, an upright police officer should prove this time what Mangalore police are, and who 'Moral police' are"

The reason for attack could be
    - These goons are just jealous about those students.
    - Jobless and so paid by the other organizations like (BJP) to create violence in the city.
    - One of the guys from the attacker might have proposed the girl and she had rejected him.
    - To rob and rape. News splashed on TV, so they changed their voice and said attack on moral policy.
I am very sure that nothing will happen to those attackers by registering any case against them. Because, their God father having a helping hand on them. They will come out of case like previous attack incidents. Best way is to go out of Karnataka and enjoy your life. These goons born as an idiot live like an idiot and die like an idiot.

I really appreciate this meaningful article by Walter.

Are women free/Independent in India? Mangalore was known for educated behaviour. Does this action mean that we have no more educated people around?

Who gave these culprits the rights of moral policing? Are we in Taliban? Touching and molesting girls in public? is it our (Hindu) culture? Hindutva tells to worship Goddesses and they ill-treat the women here?

Let them give public statements as to they never visited a prostitute or did not have a physical relation with any women? or even they do not mock at girls on the streets? If they are against women, who encourages or pushes those underprivileged women into the trade? What women should do to them for these actions? take out their eyes? cut off their hands? cut off their mouth for abusing girls?

How could they call their action as "Moral Policing" When they have snatched and stolen the precious belongings of the victims?

Does Indian culture tell us that the men can do anything to a woman? Can they touch and satisfy their greed with women by force and in public?

We can no more rely on the police and the Administration system as they have failed in their duties.

women must wake up to play their role in controlling the men at their family. Only this treatment can set things right.

Unity of women can put a break to such actions of men. If such serious action are taken, men (like culprits) will not have any guts to behave this way.

Common ladies! protect Mangalore, its freedom, its environment, its tradition and its culture too.

This was not the MANGALORE that i was born!

Thank u Walter for keeping this issue alive. I hope as a responsible journalist, u will ensure that the public all over the country are motivated to fight for justice for these victims and the matter will not die down as a nine day wonder. With the reach of daijiworld all over the national and intenational scene, u have the resources and the contacts to do so. Keep up the good fight, Mr Nandalike and let us jointly bring back the old glory to Mangalore and prove that it is once again a safe and beautiful place to live.

    Dear editor-in-chief, Mr.Walter Nanndalike,
Thank you for this above article.
It is indeed mangalore's shame. we have been shamed in the past, and WE WILL CONTINUED TO BE SHAMED in the future too. It happened in 1992, and numerous times later on, and then in september 2008, then the pub attack and this time it is july 2012
We live in a "hopeless" mangalore. There is no hope. Mangalore had been polarised some years ago on the basis of religion. And now, Mangalore (and for that matter karnataka) , is like a "work in progress " factory for certain sections of the political spectrum.WITHOUT POLITICAL BACKING, THESE INCIDENTS CANNOT HAPPEN. These youth will be used and abused by the political establishment and then ruthlessely dumped.
If you've seen the hindi movie "Vaastav" with sunjay dutt in the lead role, you'll know exactly what i mean. These you spoil their lives with chivalry thinking that they are doing a great job. THEY ARE DESTROYING THEIR OWN LIVES.
As far as the attack on the students goes, YOU CAN TAKE MY WORD ON FACE VALUE- (You too know it well) THESE STUDENTS WILL NEVER GET JUSTICE. THEY JUST HAVE TO GET ON WITH THEIR LIVES.
how else will you ever explain that this crook called pramod mutalik still moves around in our society flaunting himself? If it were a just society he'd be grinding his teeth behind bars by now.
no one has the right to take the law in their own hands. but if such incidents happen, then mangaloreans dont have hope. you just have to get along with your life. THERE ISN'T ANY FREAKIN HOPE WALTER, JUST NO HOPE.we just have to get along with life, just the way mumbai gets up and goes to work the very next day after the blasts. you have to move along. you are never going to get justice. Be it seemanth kumar singh or barak obama as D.G.P. YOU WILL JUST NOT GET JUSTICE... I sound pessimistic, but that is the truth.
when i first showed what was being aired on daiji, there was such a rage within me. but then i realised that i was helpless...

Well said Walter, but no use untill Saffron organisation supports these goons, who are fed by them.
The hope is only Next election will give the verdict against the present govt who has not only failed in banning such organisation but promoting them. I hope if police fail to take action, there will be slow retaliation form the suffered ones in same manner which will be worse and never ending.

Good write up and your point on economic impact in terms of canceled projects and investments is a valid one.

I also heard from those closely connected to few educational institutions in Mangalore that, earlier pub attack had resulted in in out of state students enrollment who used to flock to Mangalore earlier but now stick to Bangalore even though it is expensive in Bangalore.

It is time head of education institutions specifically Manipal, Nitte, Yenepolya, Karavali, Sahyadri, Srinivas etc come out protesting this disturbing trend. in student enrollment is not just a loss for these institutions but to the local economy as a whole as well.

Look at the faces trying to save our culture? What do they say about face being the mirror of a personality? Can it ever be wrong?Personally would like your web-site to see and follow what happens to the 'Namard' who slapped the innocnt girl...Hope your web-site will do it for the sake of preserving our culture.... If there was no media, these veru rowdies would have denied what they did.
If this issue does not become a national and international issue, which news would? I could not believe and was heart broken when I saw the footage.
