Prime Minister Assures Amendment to 1967 Customs Rule

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 2 : Following the intense outcry from the NRIs residing in the Gulf against the strict implementation of 1967 Customs Act, which allows a male passenger to carry only Rs 10,000 worth of gold, and female passenger only Rs 20,000 worth of gold, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has assured a delegation of members of parliament that very soon, the customs rules will be amended. The new rule will be based on the quantity of gold imported and not on its value.

Daijiworld has carried an extensive campaign against the old rule, and on the problems faced by Gulf-bound passengers at Mangalore airport customs.

A representative from Daijiworld, armed with a memorandum and the feedback from the readers of daijiworld, met Vayalar Ravi, overseas affair minister, in New Delhi last week and submitted the documents to him.

The minister in his response to daijiworld clarified that similar appeal has been made by several Kerala-based organizations in the Gulf, and a delegation of members of parliament from Kerala had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently.

The Prime Minister has assured that an amendment in the current customs law will be done.

The minister expressed his surprise over the attitude of Mangalore customs commissioner, and said that a responsible government officer must respond to the queries of the common people. "We will take serious action, if such things continue," he assured. It may be recalled that, D Purushotham, customs commissioner of Mangalore had refused to give customs guidelines to the media and failed to answer genuine questions last month. Instead, he provided a 100-page rule book, and asked passenge to educate themselves before they travel.

Daijiworld requests all noted NRE organisations abroad to send their memorandum to the central government MPs and ministers and put more pressure on the Prime Minister so that the 45-year-old Customs Act is amended very soon.

Daijiworld Campaign :

  • Mangalore: Export Certificate - 'Passport' to Trouble at Airport
  • Mangalore: Customs Commissioner's Shocking Behaviour Vindicates Public Concern
  • Walking Through Mangalore Airport Customs - A New Experience
  • An Open Letter to Ganesh Karnik - Deputy Chairman, NRI Cell - Karnataka

      STOP CORRUPTION

WHY THE CUSTOMS OFFICERS ASK BRIBE WHEN NRI COMES TO INDIA. IS NRI GETTING MONEY FROM THE TREES? WHY THEY WHAT TO LOOT MONEY FROM NRI'S WHY THEY ARE BEGGING THEY DID NOT GET MONTHLY SALARIES. IF THEY AMEND THE 1967 CUSTOMS DUTY RULE FOR IMPORITNG GOLD THEN ALL THIS CUSTOMS DUTY BEGGERS MOUTH AND A$. WILL CLOSE SOON. THEN NRI'S CAN LIFT THE HEAD OTHERWISE THEY CHEAT THE POOR PEOPLE'S MONEY AND BECOMES MORE CORRUPT COUNTRY. PLEASE AMEND THE RULES AND TRY TO STOP CORRUPTION AND MAKE ANTI CORRUPTION COUNTRY. BEST REGARDS KUMAR

Thanks daijiworld. walter N and his team. Please stay with this issue and don't let PMO's office get off the sibject with the nebulous claim that "they will fix the problem soon". the amount of gold must be fixed by wait and not by value. Also, there must be some way of allowing NRI's who left the country 30/40 yrs back with just their gold jewellery that's used on an everyday basis - they must be allowed to come back with those items. Iy would not be difficult to identify gold that's used regularly vs. gold that one brings in for selling.
Keep up the good work Walter. Daiji is our only hope. All of our elected officials are absolutely useless. All the best to Walter and his team.

I suggest that all those who have been fined as per 1967 Customs Rule, need to be refunded the amount with interest from the date of collecting the amount till the date of payment. Those who have paid the bribes, though it is an offence, should come forward and claim their money back, as they must have done so to save time and other hassles.Further CBI should raid the houses of all the custom officers who have taken bribes from the helpless passengers. I know all the above 3 things are difficult but not impossible.

Let the customs authority display clearely and with block letters what are the things to be allowed without duties and also allowed with duties @ of duties..? so that nobody may fall under the net of custom officers. There are so media in our country. but who has taken so much initiative to meet top authority in the Central Govt. It is Daijiworld only. Other media can only project camaras and publish the events but without action. Long Live Daijiworld.

Working in the gulf is much more difficult than back home, and finally after one year we come back home with the hard earned $$$$$, these custom officers treat us like Bakaras, waiting to fleece people for their hard earned money, they should put up clear poster messages, as to what is allowed in all the airports, to educate people of their rights and people should also follow, many of the travellers, do commit faults, and mistake and make a big scene in the airport, but it is the labour catagory, of people who are being cheated in the airport.
