Mangalore: Scary Moments as AI Express Flight Makes Harsh Landing

Mangalore: Scary Moments as AI Express Flight Makes Harsh Landing

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 14: All the passengers of Air India Express that arrived from Dubai to Mangalore this morning at around 6.30 am heaved a sigh of relief after the aircraft had a hard landing at Mangalore airport, apparently due to poor visibility.

Needless to say, most of the passengers had a nightmarish experience as the ghastly memories of the 2010 air crash in which 158 people had perished, is still fresh in their minds. It is only after they realized they had landed safe they began to breathe easy. One of the passengers who travelled in the same flight but did not want to be identified said “none of the passengers mustered courage to talk to the aircraft crew or thought it necessary to know the exact cause of such a harsh landing as we were happy just being alive”.

When Daijiworld.com office received a few calls from anxious passengers about the harsh landing experience they had we tried to contact the officials concerned to ferret out more details about the incident. The officials of both Mangalore International Airport and Air India Expressed are tight-lipped about the incident and were not ready to divulge any information. An airport official on condition of anonymity even said “there was no untoward incident, the aircraft landed safely and all the passengers were safe. Of course there was poor visibility in the morning when the flight landed but the aircraft landed safely though some passengers said they felt a hard jerk while landing”.

A German-based Mangalorean, a regular traveler by flights who did not wish to be named, recounted his experience of the events of the hard landing of the Dubai-Mangalore Air India Express flight. “Just before landing the pilot announced that we will overfly for 25 to 30 minutes till visibility is cleared as there was sudden appearance of some clouds. Then within the next 5 to 6 minutes the plane landed with a bump and again went up before its hard landing once again. I have travelled many times by Air India Express and have experienced some jerky landings earlier. But this one was like a bouncer, the worst of its kind I have ever undergone”, he said recounting his first-hand-experience.

He further said “I believe there was a sudden appearance of cloud which must have forced the pilot to take a decision to overfly. When the visibility was poor the pilot should have stuck to his original plan of over flying. But I just wonder what made him his change his mind all of a sudden taking such a huge risk. When he landed with a thud we all started remembering our gods and our prayers. Finally we are happy to be alive to raconteur what actually happened. From my experience I believe the pilot should have taken off to over fly rather than taking the risk of hard landing. He was a senior pilot and I am unable to even think what made him take such a risk”.

Reliable sources within Air India Express agreed the Air India Express had a hard landing in the wee hours of this morning. The source also said that some harm was caused to the tyre of the said aircraft which had a bumpy landing much to the satisfaction of all the passengers whose hearts skipped a beat untill they realized they are still alive. The source however, denied that the pilot had landed at the airport despite poor visibility. “No pilot can force himself to land without ground clearance from ATC. There might be some difference in the level of visibility experienced from ground level and from atop the aircraft. But that does not allow a pilot to force himself to land”, the source said.

Sources also said that the next Air India flight is scheduled for tomorrow but the air craft that had a harsh landing will not be released unless all the parameters of safety are taken into consideration. Meanwhile there is a possibility that the Air India Express might put into service the additional aircraft they have at their disposal in the place of the scheduled flight so that the flight service is not disrupted.

Only a detailed investigation will be able to throw more light on the hard landing experienced today by Air India Express at Mangalore Airport. Air India cannot afford to give such a horrendous travelling experience to its passengers again and again.

I was one of the passenger, the pilot had announced he would wait for 20 minutes, but suddenly he started descending and this incident happened.barely i could see 15mtr from the window i wonder how did the pilot planned to land, i feel the decision making ability of our AIE pilots is poor, they are risking so many lives. Also since fog is more coz of height of the airport, no flight should be allowed to land before 8am.

I think AIE pilots have been given a green signal to try out all the possible stunts with passengers on board at this particular airport!!! With these kind of errors Mangalore airport will not have international airport status at all, AIE know very well the low-income passenger would fly anyways….it’s a highly monopolized and profit making sector to this airline…they will never give up on this…..

airIndiaexpress, people have dispraise, anger they express.
If people wanted an airport on a mountain wouldn't try Himalaya for the express landing! The early morning flight from Dubai is a nightmare because most of the time the Mangalore visibility is poor I remember we were once flown to Kochi after attempting about 45 minutes and the pilot said we have no fuel so we can take you to Calicut but they again announced no we will take you to Kochi. after landing in Kochi we had to travel by bus a journey that took almost 18 hours to reach Mangalore. Most regretful flying experience with AIExpress.

Yes, I was on this flight and we had a rough landing but thank God we are all safe. The plane landed with a thud and looked like it will veer off the runway but it came to halt smoothly not like the one which met with a crash when it overshot the rumway. There was a small clearence on approach but there might have a been a turbulance due to sudden fog and we could see the change of conditions on the runway when we were collecting our bags (for which should be mainly complaining as it takes nearly 1-1/2 hrs to get our bags).

    1) Stop Air India Express monopoly and Stop Air India Express flights from GCC/Mangalore sectors.

    2) Grant landing permission to other airlines like Jet Airways / Air Arabia / Qatar Airways / Oman Airways / Emirates Airlines / Sri Lanka Airways / similar other better airlines to operate their flights to Mangalore / GCC sectors.

    3) It is better to look for a vast plain land for a safe bigger Intl airport for Mangalore.

Better the NRIs, Local and Overseas Indian Organizations, Politicians, Media, Prominent Personalities and the Social Workers help and follow up the a/m action plan with respective authorities.

@Savi - This is not true. The average age of AI Express fleet is a lot less than Air India. All Air India Express aircrafts are new aircrafts (first owner is AI express).
    @vivian
Mangalore Airport is ILS equipped. So it really doesnt matter what time the aircrafts land and how good the visibility is (unless its below ILS minimums). The only thing that matters is if the pilots are trained for the approach or not.

    Wed, Aug 15 2012

Only way one can counter these is by having a longer runway. One one can be 100% right to land every time at same spot, yes there is ILS system which guides to the runway. In this case what happens is if there is any sudden cross wind or if the aircraft is high on approach the pilot cannot make a smooth glide and touch down little further. He has to put dont the plane at the same spot no matter what because the risk runway excursion is very high. Therefore you get these sudden thug or landing whenever there are other factors influencing the flight approach and touch down compared to other airport, CIVIL aviation has to make efforts to extend the runway length otherwise this is a risk we always have to remember while landing!!!!

Sirs, do not blame Air India Express just because you have decided to comment on this forum. If Air India Express was so bad then think why there were passengers in the said Aircraft. Tough people blame Air India Express for different reasons, the travel experience is much far better than travelling via Mumbai or other Air Ports. People blame about food, service in a span of 3-4 hours but ignore to identify the main purpose of travel which Air India Express fulfills with ease and economically. I have travelled several times from Dubai to Mangalore and vice-versa but have not faced the difficulties that have faced travelling via Mumbai.

I believe those who comment negative about their travel experience with Air India Express are those who have travelled only once or have not travelled with other Air Service providers or wealthy people wanted to save money by travelling with Air India Express else why people comment negative and we find Air India Express fully packed most of the time.

All these incidents and accidents should not be blamed on Mangalore Airport or runway. Indian Airlines have been flying here for 60 years and they had only one incident in all those years. Air India is a perpetual danger. People should avoid flying this airline at any cost. It is better to fly via Bangalore or Bombay or very soon Kannur than risk your lives, miss the flight due to strikes or get harassed by Mangalore customs.

Airport authorities need to reconsider location or some other strategies to keep passengers safe. We can’t blame on airline if situation is not safe for landing and we don’t need another accident.

Hi all, it is really scary to experience such a hard landing...especially in mangalore with AIE and all the bad memories of the crash... but lets not make this a big issue against AIE, such hard landings happen rarely and not done purposely even though it is unfortunate. such things happen everywhere in the world.
