M'lore: National Level Intercollege IT Fest inaugurated at AIMIT

Mangalore, Mar 14: ‘Epitome XIII’was inaugurated at Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology (AIMIT) on the March 14 at 9:30 am.

The chief guest for the programme was Sandesh Bhat , vice president of India Software Labs of IBM in Bangalore. The programme was presided over by Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal of St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

The other dignitaries on the dais were Fr Denzil Lobo, director of AIMIT, professor Santhosh Rebello - dean of AIMIT, and Bharathi Pilar and Roshan Suvaris, the staff coordinators.

The overture was delivered by Ashwin D’Costa followed by the welcome of the audience by Nadeen Saldanha, both as Masters of Ceremonies. Roshni Upasna formally introduced the chief guest who declared the Fest open.

An innovatively designed ‘Epitome XIII Cybertron’ video presentation filled the ambience of the auditorium with the right feel and spirit, after the divine invocation.

Sandesh Bhat, in his inaugural address, riveted the audience with his reference to IBM’s 5 in 5 forecast and the era of cognitive computing based on the five human senses that would change the world in the next five years.

A former Aloysian, Bhat has been in the industry for 25 years and stirred a new wave of innovative thinking as a precursor to the approaching technology that is being developed by IBM. In appreciation of St Aloysius College, he also mentioned how his using an IBM PC during his student years sparked off the initial inspiration to be with IBM one day, and how it all transpired over the years. He said ‘innovation is the key’ to all kinds of development.

Professor Santhosh Rebello briefly touched on the objective of Jesuit education and the progressive student mindset toward exceeding in their performance. The dean also congratulated Fr Denzil Lobo on his recent appointment as the rector of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) and commended him on his accomplishments as an educationist and a visionary, and as the person who took St Aloysius College to new heights in academics.

Fr. Denzil reminisced on his long association with Sandesh as his student and as a friend. He spoke about the phenomenal evolution in technology and how in recent years we have moved from market-economy to knowledge-economy.

Fr  Denzil said “what we might have thought to be the last of the innovation years back is in fact just a lesson for all by which one needs to learn not to limit one’s thinking but to be open for unforeseen and surprising changes. There is no telling which direction technology takes in terms of its agility and human dexterity. His reference to IBM’S SMUBA technology focused on the changing trend and speed in which technology is moving.” 
 
Fr  Swebert emphasized on the importance of self-confidence and why one needs to believe in one’s own self and how that conviction should be complemented by believing in others and the world around us that is the root of our success in the form of cohesive teams and not just as individuals. The other important things he mentioned were vision, passion and mission which are critical to success.

At the conclusion of the inaugural ceremony Bharathi delivered the vote of thanks.
