Mangalore, Feb 18: It is the mismatch between aspirations and opportunities that leads the youth to undergo frustration. This further leads to resorting to easier means of achieving goals which also includes illegal methods, said Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police B Dayanand.
He was speaking after inaugurating the one-day workshop on ‘Crime Among Youth’ jointly organised by the DK Police and the Department of Criminology, School of Social Work Mangalore, Roshni Nilaya at the college premises on Saturday February 18.
An alarming development, which has taken place in Mangalore in the recent times, is the involvement of youth in underworld activities. Further, a major cause of concern is that the youth are becoming perpetrates of crime. Aggressive and violent behaviour is reflected in the college campuses and the instances of youth being involved in heinous crimes like murder and rape is alarming. Adding to this is the attempt to influence the youth towards naxalism, extremist and terrorist ideologies. The latest trend that Mangalore has seen is the involvement of youngsters in gang wars.
The SP also advocated correctional approach in dealing with juveniles and young criminals.
Over 120 students from various colleges of Mangalore participated in the workshop, which also had a mime show by the students of Roshni Nilaya.
Principal School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya presided over the programme. SDM Law College lecturer Mahesh Chandra Nayak, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Puttur Dr A S Rao IPS, administrator, Colaco Hospital, Mangalore Dr K K Varghese, reporter Vijaya Karnataka, Mangalore Vinayak Bhat Muroor, student Sarah Francis D’Souza participated as panelists in the discussions.
