Mangalore, Oct 18: The Mangalore city corporation (MCC) started clearing the city of banners and buntings on Thursday, October 17.
 
The officials of the corporation led by excise official Praveen got hoardings and buntings put on road sides in connection with Dassara and other programmes removed.

Some people near Urva stores objected against removing a large Sharada Mathe banner. They said that some banners wishing political leaders are left for months. “Large buildings are constructed next to the road. Nobody bothers about those things but coming to remove the goddesse’s banner within a day of finishing the programme is insulting”.

“Some rules are meant to beautify the city. Some people ignore the rules and hang banners and hoardings, spoiling the beauty of the city. Some are getting permission from the corporation while the others do not ask for such permission showing their arrogance. So the corporation has to come forward to remove the banners.
 
However, during certain special occasions such as Navarathri we liberalize the rules but say that the banners will be removed on the next day of the festivities. Besides that, we are not taking any fees for them.
 
We have notified in the newspapers that the banners should be removed before October 16, failing which fine will be collected and the cost involved to remove the banners will be taken from those who have hung them. Some people have responded and removed them. The city corporation has taken up the work of removing the banners that are left out. We are doing our duty on orders from higher authorities. We seek the cooperation of all the concerned,” said assistant excise officer, K Praveen.
