Group assaults pregnant woman, husband in bus

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Nov 9: In a shocking incident, a group of five including a bus conductor allegedly assaulted a pregnant woman and her husband inside the bus and snatched away her gold chain. The incident took place at Manala near Bajpe on Friday November 8.

The group attacked Maimuna (32) and her husband Ansar (32), residents of Manala. Both have been admitted to Wenlock hospital.

Maimuna, who is eight months pregnant, had come with her husband to Lady Goschen Hospital for a checkup. It is said that on the way back in Rajshri Travels bus, as there was no seat available for Maimuna to sit, her husband requested a passenger to allow her a seat.

The passenger who was said to be in a drunken stupor started quarrelling with the couple. Later he was joined by the bus conductor along with 4 others who attacked Ansar. Meanwhile, Maimuna tried to intervene to stop the fight and she too was attacked by the group.
During the attack, Maimuna’s burkha was torn by the assaulters, said Ansar in his complaint with the police.

Locals Balakrishna, Nitin, Purusha, Sridar and the bus conductor allegedly attacked the couple. They also snatched away Maimuna's gold chain weighing 2 sovereigns, added Ansar.

Maimuna became ill as she was hit on the stomach. She was rushed to Wenlock hospital and later admitted to Lady Goshen hospital.

A case has been registered in Bajpe police station.

    Nihaal,

"Do you realize what you have said? You mean to say if the woman wasn't pregnant, it is ok to physically assault her?! Please watch what you say. And don't make unnecessary remarks on the burqa

I have said what I said and I reiterate it. I posted my comment keeping myself in her place because I know what it is to be standing while being pregnant. Now, you tell me, if she wasn't pregnant, would her husband have asked for help ? A big 'NO' ! Was there any chance of an assault ? A big 'NO' again !

Now, would the men have supported the drunkard if there was any display that she was pregnant - you bet - they would have been sympathetic with her if that was the case !

Therefore, before warning commentators based on your assumptions, you use some common sense ! I had clearly said that I wasn't making any mockery of the clothing applicable !

    Lydia Lobo,

Whatever said and done, how can you justify an attack on a woman? Pregnant or not pregnant. Wearing a burkha or without a burkha. And you are saying here that those men could not see that she was pregnant because of her burkha. Fine. Let us assume so. But could they at least see that she is a WOMAN? I'm sorry to say but by the looks of it you are speaking for those men. I suppose you should imbibe some common sense Ms Lydia Lobo, not me. You know what, as you mentioned, you really should have been in her place.

    Nihaal,

Those who vacate seats for needy people do not support assault on the weaker members of the society.

But, those who stuff their pregnant wife in a crowded bus do make a man exactly like you!

    Lydia Lobo,

Wow. You are unbelievable. Now you are drifting away from the point. Anyways, since you have brought this up, please do realize that not many have the luxury to afford to travel by cab or auto. We are talking bajpe to mlore here. Please understand that most of the buses plying on this route are full. If you do not support an assault on the weaker section of the society, you shouldn't have made that comment earlier in favor of those men. And stop judging me based on your assumptions!

It is shocking to hear such assaults are taking place in Mangalore. Usually when there is no seat ,and a pregnant woman is Standing, its understood someone stands up and give a seat to her, irrespective of with or without burkha, Religion, even Senior Person. when not conductor has to do it. here conductor changed the side.He should be thrown out of his Job and take immediate Action against him. Of course the drunken man Need not to speak about him. But there were other People normal could get up and give the seat to her so that the quarrel would calm down. Nobody felt responsible.very sad.when in future such incidents increases where it will end? Hope woman will recover soon and Forget the incident.and Baby is fine.

    Rita,

It does not happen in Mangalore that a locally based man rises to give his seat to a woman - may she be pregnant, holding a child or very old. They simply look the other way hinting WOMEN have four seats reserved for them. There are instances that a man sits next to a man and takes the child from his wife but does not offer the seat to her because there is another man next to whom he does not want to his wife sit. Embarrassed, many times the other man vacates the seat and the couple sits together.

I have on many occasions offered to hold a child while a woman boarded a bus with or gave away my seat to most deserved with pleasure. This is, only to be stared at with surprise by fellow-seated women. If women have this cheap characteristic, guess how men could be !

Well, men who left Mangalore for a while and returned, have emulated the habit of allowing women sit first and then they look for a seat for themselves. Otherwise, a direct answer is 'I have paid the fare hence I am the rightful occupant' !

EBRAHIM, UCHILA, For that matter just to set the record, even we know the intentions of SFI or PFI are all those groups sprouting in our region or in Kerala. We also the hands behind the intentions of your Khangress who in the name of the anti - superstition bill want to stop trip to religious place for children thus bringing vote bank politics to primary school level. But if we want to live in harmony in society we have to remove all these glasses we are wearing to judge each other.
RSS was formed just to safeguard the rights of nationalists & not to convert or drive out other people. RSS is the first to serve the victims of any natural calamity irrespective of what the religions of the victims, however pro khangress media do not talk about this. They only highlight some black sheep's within. JUst because some half learned scholars twist the whole Ideology of RSS to you people does not mean that it should be so. Even we get thousands of such stories, however our community is weak in marketing those and using it in our favor during election time, just like the way khangress is doing and you people are falling for it.

    Dear EBRAHIM-UCHILA, Ummar-Udupi

Where in the news or investigation did you find out this is the work of RSS or this is Moral policing ?? common man it's because of divided minds like you giving scope to more communal issues in the region.
If the News mentioned above is only the truth then, No matter whoever did this it is totally against humanity whether he is a Hindu, Christian or a Muslim. First of all assaulting a family man, that too when he is with his wife that too pregnant that crosses all lines of inhuman behavior. Any sane person would normally end up giving a seat, that too if the guys were sitting in the seats reserved for ladies he just doesn't have any business to argue in the situation. If the Husband knew he was drunk he could have anyway avoided any confrontation with him and could have asked the seat with any next passenger or the ladies in the front 4 rows as his wife was pregnant than insisting to sit in this seat only. Also Conductor joining th assault, I really can't believe this if its true he needs o straight away thrown to Jail for not diffusing the situation but adding to it. Am sure there should be some other story to it. But as I said before if the truth is only the news above all the guys should be booked for assault, molestation & loot, that too on a pregnant lady.

Regarding you guys blaming any organization, first blame the Govt who are giving reservations & freebies to a community based on religion thus resulting in People from other sects being jealous of the former and seeing each other in Red eyes. Because of this vote bank politics people have started seeing each other in vengeance because they don't deserve what the other community deserves just because they belong to that particular community. If this continues there will be no harmony left in the society, people will only judge each other with the religion they represent not as a person.

One last question for moral police supporters!

Still you are supporting the moral police after reading this ? You guys still thinking they are humans ? still you support them if they attack one of your family women ? If you think this is wrong what happened yesterday with a pregnant lady you can condemn the incident in this blog like you are praising them for some of their acts !

The act of pulling woman is an outrage to the modesty of a woman whether she wears burkha, saree or jeans. The evidence tendered by the victim should be sufficient to nail all accused and it was not necessary to seek corroboration. Communal politics made people blind and communal hatred and violence or danger to social integrity and if allowed to continue will endanger the security of all Indians. Today we have created prejudice in the minds our children about our own fellow brothers, which they carry with themselves for the rest of their life and this sabotage their growth. And many a times it is this prejudice that cause the stems of a communal war, thereby leaving the country battered.

Political leaders do not have responsibilities and their concerns is vote bank. They infuse hatred and play with the sentiments of people. We have to shoulder the responsibilities of transmitting true cultural and religious information to our children and it is necessary so that children mould themselves according to the values and further shoulder the responsibilities of social integrity. Do we give our children the right information about our respective religions? We often miss out on providing value from our religions that can spread communal harmony and a feeling of brotherhood for people of other religions. Our education system also has played a major role in creating religious bias although it does not appear in the open. Ours is a society that demands coexistence for economic and social welfare. People who believe in peaceful coexistence have to come forward and campaign to resist communal politics of all kinds and work together with persons, groups and organizations through out the country to eradicate the communal virus. We might have differences of views and our ideologies might well be poles apart. That in no way means that we cannot live peacefully with each other.

FOR WHATEVER BE THE CASE IF PREGNANT WOMEN IS ATTACKED THEY SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY IN THE JAIL.

Women are not to be attacked.
And if they attack when the women is pregnant the offense is a blunder.

    Joseph,

People normally rise and give seat to women carrying child or a pregnant woman - I myself do that. If one is in a Burkha, nobody can make out whether she is pregnant or otherwise. Unfortunate that the seating passenger happened to be a drunkard and more so that the conductor and others joined the drunkard which would not have happened if the woman appeared pregnant.

Well, I am not making a mockery of the clothing but that is the reality.

Lydia Bai, the seating passenger was drunk, but, conductor and others were in stable condition. What right do these people have to attack a woman, whether she is Pregnant or not ? It is not the drunken passenger, but, the conductor and others should be arrested. I know some jobless youths travel to and fro in buses with the mercy of driver and conductor and for a happy evening, chilled beer party act swiftly to snatch the chain or pick a pocket. Strict action to be taken against these rowdies.

Mr.Joseph, there is no doubt the act of hooligans is more barbaric and inhuman.Needs to be taken up very seriously by police. These type of cruel unheard in and around Mangalore so far.
But Mr.Joseph do you know the reasons for this cruel act? Four persons indulged in the cruelty are under the influence liquor.Somewhere you have in the comment taken it very lightly may be for the sake of arguments.Pl understand that liquor is the most dreaded element that spoils the society which needs banned by the govt before it is too late.Siddu, before embarking on anti Hindu/anti superstition bill should ban liquor sale in the state completely.Any how the state does not require much funds for developmental works as its not working at all.Just time passing till 2014 elections.Main motto is hit Hindu, get votes!!!

KRPrabhu, it is not the liquor, but, the 'charbi'. Everyone knows which group these jobless rowdies belong to. They are under the impression that Karnataka is still ruled by BJP & their Godfathers will come to their rescue for anything they do. When BJP was ruling Karnataka and boasting of increased sale of liquor and generating liquor income, no BJPians never raised their voice to ban alcohol.
