Mangalore: Police nab thieves who stole 20,000 cattle in nine years

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (EP)

Mangalore, Jan 1: The police on Tuesday December 31 arrested two notorious cattle thieves who are said to have stolen a whopping 20,000 cattle during the last nine years.

The accused are identified as Hussain Kabeer alias Kabbi alias Bodda Kabbi (35) and Jabbar Hussain alias Jabbi (26), residents of Churchgudde, Kalavar, and hailing from Pakeeranakatte, Kaup.

The two accused had reportedly entered the house belonging to Mahadevi at Kana on a night in July 2013 and hit a cow and a calf of a good breed with weapons and taken them away, threatening the inmates of assault with deadly weapons when they tried to stop them. They had taken the cattle in a Tata Sumo vehicle. The accused have said that the cattle were killed by them when they noticed the police following them, and the meat was handed over to a nearby slaughterhouse.

They had taken their vehicle to a service centre thinking that the police might have got the details of the vehicle and have never been to the service center to get it back since.

There were widespread protests in the district after the cattle theft. The accused have also said that they had stolen a cow from the shed of Jagadish Shetty of Mukka. Another accused in the theft is absconding.

The accused are said to have stolen cattle from Shringeri, Koppa, Chikmagalur, Moodigere, Kottigehara, Balehonnur, Agumbe, Begar, Maninakatte, Hariharapura, Kammaradi, Saksleshpur, Gonibeedu, Kushalnagar, Madikeri, Honnavara, Kumta, Bhatkal, Udupi and other places, and sold them to slaughterhouses at Mangalore, Kudroli, Jokatte, Bantwal, Melkar etc. They had stolen eight cows at once in the ghat area. They used to steal cows there when unable to get them elsewhere.

The accused have said that they have been stealing cattle for the last nine years and have stolen more than 20,000 cattle during the period.

The accused Hussain Kabeer is said to be a notorious interstate thief and an accomplice of notorious prisoner Kannaradi Hanif. Though the Chikmagalur court had issued a warrant to arrest him, he could not be traced. There are several criminal cases pending against Jabbar Hussain in different police stations in the district. However, he was wandering freely, allegedly supported by politicians and money power. He even appeared as chief guest in many social functions. He used to be invited as chief guest in some of the programmes soon after his release from prison.

A cow of good breed would fetch them Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. If those are slaughtered, they used to get meat weighing 300 to 400 kg which would fetch more than Rs one lac. The accused were thus living a life of luxury. They had appointed some people to identify houses with cattle. The thefts were being conducted based on their information. They had also robbed jewellery from people by threatening them. There are cases of shootout against Hussain Kabeer in Manipal police station and attempt to murder cases in Karkala and Padubidri police stations. They had gone into hiding without appearing in the court.

Suratkal police have so far held five cattle thieves. It is assumed that many more cattle thieves are active in the state.

M A Nataraj, police inspector of Surathkal police station, sub inspector Rajendra B, M Kamareshan and team were part of the arrest operation.

MLA B A Mohiuddin Bava and Mangalore police commissioner R Hitendra congratulated the police team on the arrests.

Going by the figure 20,000 cows in 9 years, it is apparent that per year 222 cows, per month 185 and per day 6 cows have been stolen. This figure seems a bit confusing. Is it a new year joke !!!!! ?

Your comments are inappropriate. How slaughter houses are running? If cattle are lost of someone, it is not an incidence like rape that it would attract attention of the Media. Why milk prices are going up day by day? Why supply of adultrated milk is on rise?
Reason is obvious. Source of milk-cattle are being butchered in large number to meet demand of slaughter houses.Think again, Sir, how much cattle are required to meet demand of meat export?
Last year, around 1,50,00,000 Buffaloes were slaughtered to meet beef export.Go and check Govt Web Site of APEDA and calculate yourself.

This just a cock and bull story by police. There is no material evidence by which police can prove the episode in the court of law. it is a narrated story. it is sad that the cows have no shelter and the owners are to blame for this apathy. Therefore if the cows are left open in public area naturally bound to abuse and slaughter. Indirectly these noble thieves have fulfilled the demand & scarcity of meat eaters. Does this vigilant police have will- power to nab the politicians(BJP & Congress) who are supporting the meat trade. I am sure this story will disappear and forgotten soon. Meat trade will continue as long as humans eat meat in this planet.

Nanag Shetty, you have asked why no Chicken, Swine & goats.
The Answer is - Country Chickens cannot be caught so easily while they are feeding in open field as they run very fast. Goats are always in Herds and carefully looked after by Sheppard & his ferocious Dog while grazing outside. Eating Swine is forbidden for Some Section of the Society. So, ultimately mild and slow moving Cow is the only left out animal for easy theft.

Shocking that this large scale cattle lifting racket so widely spread out could ever go on without the knowledge of the authorities for so long, definitely there are many more culprits involved, on the face of it appears to be a "systematic one"!!! Also, there is a high probability that this gang is also involved in various other illegal/nefarious activities which needs to be investigated thoroughly and reports made public!!

In this Record Book the Number one Position is occupied by Belikeri Iron Ore Theft, that is world Record of 6 lakh Tons of Iron Ore Stolen. ( Illegal iron Ore Mining in Bellary also comes under the category of Theft but it different type of theft). Now number two position is grabbed by these Cow thieves.
If Karnataka CID is asked to investigate this Cow theft Case, then they will surely give Clean chit to these thieves just like they gave clean chit to Belikeri thieves.

When the cows are unattended and roaming freely everywhere, there is no need to work out a strategy to steal these cattle. One has to just drive them away.

How and why BJP Govt. for FIVE years could not apprehend this notorious cattle thieves\rustlers makes me wonder...(?) (!!!).
Was there a nexus of some socially known group\s who were not interested in catching these thieves or providing information
to the police for their personal benefit?
These saviours of cows, once in a while chase\catch stray cattle rustlers, outside these groups.
They were not allowed any outsiders than their own known party to do the rustling and would benefit from it continuously.
That seems to be the reason for not apprehending this particular cattle rustlers for such a long time. It more or less looks like that.
People should make a note of these possible facts when praising saviors.

Good that the present Govt. arrested these people and should expect a backlash from the people whose income is curtailed. Police also should try and find out their accomplices in this crime.

If they have really done this for 9 years, it's a sure thing the almost a big part of Muslim community who are the largest consumers of beef would have been fed by this stolen beef. And we call ourself as Muslims? This is the high time we need to check our backyard. These filths of the community should be eliminated without mercy. I hope this news will spread within the community and it will make people decide thousand times before buying beef. And I hope all the families who had lost cattle will get compensation, either by government or by selling the body parts of the above accused.
