CM Kejriwal turns 'anarchist', blocks heart of capital

New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS): In a scene unprecedented in the annals of democracy, Delhi's ruling Aam Admi Party (AAP) Monday laid siege to an important arterial avenue of the capital as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in power for three weeks, declared he was an "anarchist" and vowed to continue protests till his government is given control over Delhi Police.

Directly confronting the federal government and unfazed by the criticism for resorting to activism, Kejriwal, sitting close to the seat of power in the Indian capital, thundered: "Yes, I am an anarchist.

Kejriwal even asked "honest" policemen to take leave and join him in his street protest at Rail Bhavan that, he warned, could extend to 10 long days in the bitter cold. He said he would run the city government from the protest site. The siege, happening five days before the Jan 26 Republic Day parade in which Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is the chief guest, put the central government in a quandary as the Congress party supports the AAP government from outside.

His action was roundly criticised by other political parties, including the main opposition BJP, whose leader Arun Jaitley wondered "did the AAP form the government to wreck the system from within."

Kejriwal and his largely young, white-cap wearing army of chanting and clapping supporters, appeared headed for a long stand-off with the authorities. There were scuffles between the AAP supporters and police personnel, who wanted Kejriwal and his men to move to Jantar Mantar area further downtown, where demonstrations normally take place.

The atmosphere was tense at times when AAP supporters shouted slogans against the police. Delhi Transport Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said he was detained by the police, a charge that was denied by officials.

In the morning, defying prohibitory orders, Kejriwal and his six cabinet colleagues tried to reach union Home Minister Sushilkumar Sinde's office in North Block to demand action against five policemen who did not heed his ministers. But a large posse of policemen and paramilitary stopped the 45-year-old chief minister, an activist-turned-politician, and his team midway.

The chief minister and his group then alighted from their cars and staged the sit-in near the Rail Bhavan, not far from Parliament House.

In no time, after he had addressed the supporters, Kejriwal and his ministers started official work at the protest site - studying and signing files.

Speaking to IANS his secretary Rajendra Kumar said: "I have nothing to do with the protest. I am carrying out the instructions of the CM." He also said that a Delhi cabinet meeting is scheduled for Tuesday and it may be held at the protest site.

In his impromptu address to his supporters, Kejriwal squarely blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Shinde and the central government for the situation that has led to his protests and appealed people to join him. He said any crisis arising out of the situation, including disturbance in holding the Republic Day parade, will be the responsibility of the central government.

Home Minister Shinde, who supervises Delhi Police, rejected his demand of police control, saying police could not be put under the city government as Delhi was the national capital. He also asked Kejriwal to call off his protest keeping in mind the stature of the chief minister's office.

Shinde also announced that Delhi's Lt Governor Najeeb Jung had ordered a judicial inquiry into the matter. An angry Kejriwal rejected Shinde's plea.

By evening, many volunteers carrying durries and mats to spend the night on sat near the protest site in small groups, waved the Indian national flags and sang devotional songs.

The unprecedented protest forced Delhi Metro to shut four major stations, causing inconvenience to thousands of commuters. The Metro also announced that two metro stations that lead to Rail Bhavan will be closed Tuesday too.

Slamming Kejriwal, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari charged the chief minister and his ministers with "constitutional anarchy" and "gimmickry".

The face-off between Delhi Police and the three-week-old Delhi government erupted after Delhi's Law Minister Somnath Bharti accused some officers of not taking action against an alleged sex-and-drug racket involving some Ugandan nationals.

The issue escalated into a near diplomatic row after a group of Ugandans and Nigerians accused Bharti and AAP volunteers of misbehaviour.

Kejriwal vehemently defended Bharti.

Mr Kejriwal you are in a responsible post to serve the people so please do not misuse the power.one side thinking is not solving the problem should be diplomatic and it is a team work should do in the team because of this darna so many people are facing inconvenience. Instead of that go through the court.when we are working in the team need not only instructing others, but need to listen to others opinion also .

Central Govt doesn’t have backbone....why they hesitate to take action against African's who is involved in drug and flesh trade... Central Govt forgot that in 1960 's Ugandan dictator Idi Amin kicked out entire Indian population from Uganda , confiscated their property/wealth....

In our Karnataka also we can see many African drug mafia near Engg/ Medical Campus. Forget Karnataka, just go to Mumbai ( Dahisar - Meera Road )....you can see tens of heavy built Nigerians who are openly involved in the drug trade....Still our State Govt and Central Govt looking other way...

When AAP Govt want to take action, Delhi Police and their Commander S K Shinde NOT ready to budge.

Last week What Arvind Kejrival said 100% true. DELHI POLICE IS MILKING COW OF CENTRAL GOVT.

I totally agree with your comments Mr. John. Mr. Kejriwal is a strong leader who fights for peoples right. However, with little inconvenience due to his dharna, Delhi people have betrayed him. Like other CMs, he too can turn blind eye to the needs of people and comfortably occupy govt. villa, get full security, loot the county and fill his pockets. No, his conscience does not allow him to do that. He is the only CM who is bold enough to bare the corrupt Ministers of Congress. His statement on Shinde is 100% correct. All the evil, rape and murder happened in Delhi is due to misrule of Shinde. People are selfish. If the fruit is sweet, they will happily accept it, and if it is sour, they force Mr. Kajeriwal to swallow it. Both BJP and Congress will never allow any honest, sincere and people friendly party to exist. Jai ho Kajeriwal. Jai ho AAP. Jai Hind.

Your racist mentality and gross ignorance is clearly on view here. Why single out Africans? Is it because of the colour of their skin? For every African selling drugs you will find four times that number of Indians doing the same in the streets. You will also find Russians, Israeli's, British and many others doing the same. If that is the case, why single out Africans only? Please remember one Idi Amin does not represent the continent of Africa. Have you not heard of Nelson Mandela, Julius Nyerere, Patrice Lumumba,Wole Soyinka, Kwame Nakrumah just to name a few. Maybe you have not.

I have lived in Africa and travel to many African countries frequently and so know more than you of Africa and its people. Do you know how many Indians live and thrive and have become millionaires in Africa, especially Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa? In every African country you will find Indians. What if they started getting targeted because of a few ignorant Indians like you? Do not be a frog in a pond. Remember, every human is equal before God.

Delhi Police did not come under the central government yesterday. They have always been so. This is simply a drama to cover his (Khejriwal) inadequacies to govern. This mango party simply does not know governance and is looking for an excuse to resign by shifting the blame on the Centre. Khejriwal wants to be arrested so that he can resign and that is why he has brought his sadak chaap friends into the streets. This thug Somnath Bharati richly deserves a place behind bars. He is a goon and this can bee seen by his behavior and the language that he uses against those to question his goondaism. This upstart party will soon die as the people who voted for them looking for a change are now angry and frustrated.

Don, Learn or understand English first. That is exactly what I said. My comment says that this did not happen yesterday. The Delhi police has been under the central government always and not after Khejriwal became CM. Your knowledge and understanding of the English language is in question here.

    Kejriwal is becoming Craziwal!
It seems peoples mandate is frittered by chaos & anarchy with road show to bolster Loksabha campaign.
He wants to get sympathy votes if Congress withdraws support as he knows his manifesto he cannot fulfill or publicity is not garnered without ROAD SHOWS.
Voters will be losers as governance is taking back stage with gimmicks like these with Confrontation Agenda with Police or Administration, which is detrimental for the welfare of society.
Its Time Judiciary Intervene to bring Law & Order to the Capital City.

Because at that time (1993-1998) there was no interference from central government. They were worried about their own seats. We have seen 4 prime ministers during that period.
