Private airlines told to give VIP treatment to MPs


New Delhi, Jan 29 (PTI): Private airlines, including the no-frill ones, have been directed by the government to ensure that special privileges, like faster security clearances and lounge access, are given to MPs in line with what Air India has been providing so far.

While the protocol to accord such services to MPs have been in existence for over three years now, aviation regulator DGCA, in a fresh directive to all airlines, has pointed out that the airports and airlines were "not adhering to the guidelines on protocol norms and courtesy to be extended to Members of Parliament."

Noting that a 2007 circular of Civil Aviation Ministry providing the guidelines and instructions in this regard, had only listed Air India, DGCA chief Prabhat Kumar also advised the Ministry "to review the order on protocol norms and courtesy for the Members of Parliament and include the names of other airlines companies including LCC (low-cost carriers)".


The DGCA directive came after Parliament's 'Committee on Violation of Protocol Norms and Contemptuous Behaviour of government officers with member(s) of Lok Sabha', which is part of the Privileges Committee, had raised the issue with the Ministry late last year.

The committee had said that "airports and airlines are not adhering to the guidelines on protocol norms and courtesy to be extended to the members of Parliament."Barring Air India which has been extending such courtesies to the MPs so far, the other airlines which have been instructed are Jet Airways, IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir.

The protocol, which is "to be followed by all concerned, including private airports and airlines", includes reserved lounge facilities, complimentary tea, coffee or water, free access in the terminal building and designation of one officer of airport as Protocol Officer to extend all facilities and courtesies to MPs, according to reply to a Lok Sabha question in August last year.

    I am appalled to hear this news. VIP treatment for these rogues? For what? Let's make this very clear. The MPs do not own this country. They have been elected to serve the people and not to lord over us. There is absolutely no justification to treat them like VIPs. Let them travel economy class and stand in the queue like the rest of us. No special treatment for anybody, certainly not for these dongi MPs. They don't even deserve to travel by air. And let them not forget that their airfares are being paid from the tax payers' money. You and I are paying these fares. Look at the way Air India has been reduced to. Not too long ago, it was the pride of India, but our national airline is being run by these unscrupulous politicians as their personal airline. It belongs to the country and not to any politician. Let them remember this. First, let them learn to behave and only after that think about travelling by air.

    Corrupt DGCA finally spoiled the value of VIP status.

    Does these rotten and corrupt MP's of India need VIP treatment.? They are already a burden like white elephant to the common tax payer Indian citizen.

    Now it is confirmed why Air India is not making profits because. These useless MP's use all these facilities for their private trips rather to serve the people.

    India will continue to be a developing country as long as this corrupt political system exists. God only can save us.

    The most disgusting news to read. VIP treatment for the M.Ps! They are not elected by the people to act like royalty and so above the law. Some of the uneducated politicians act quite rowdy type and giving them VIP treatment?
    When the Indian Federal and State Governments are going to learn some lessons of sanity and decency, but still now deeply hidden in the antiquated domineering British system of royalty and imperialism.

    I have traveled in the same flight with some Congressman, they are treated like the rest of the passengers without any special treatment. VIP treatment for their ......march?

    ask for VIP treatment?
    They should be traveling by Bus or Train to understand the conditions of our Road, surroundings and difficulties faced by commuters!
    Otherwise will they know ground realities?
    Only on emergencies they should travel by Plane, that too in economy class!

    Today AAP is trying to remove VIP treatment to MP n MLA. Removed lal bati from cars. Why are we encouraging again to give special treatment. These MP's can afford beverage, etc. on their own. So please do not encourage again special treatment.

    Why MPs should be given special benefits in airlines?They are supposed to serve the people and not to be worshipped.Most of the MPs are crooks and they have made lot of money .They can afford to get special benefits by paying like the ordinary passengers.

    Somehow we can agree with this circular of DGCA if these MPs’ are really rushing somewhere to serve the Nation but if they rushing to their Delhi Head Quarters to sort out some internal or personal issues, do they deserve this kind of service? Instead, our Central and Statement Government can start with their own Small Aircraft as a shuttle service between Capitals without disturbing common public

    RTI activists, pls dig out the wasteful expenditure we tax payers shell out on these good for nothing goondas during their tenure.

    Just because Air India gives this previlage to these goondas, does not mean others must follow suit.

    Nobody should be given any special privileges in private airlines like most civilized countries...if they want special privileges they should travel by Air India or Charted planes...

    India is one of the few countries in the world who think their MPs are special...in US no Senator or Congressman is provided any special treatment anywhere else other than Capitol Hill(US equivalent of Parliament Building)....

    These morons will fold their hands to donkeys too to get elected and pretend that they are servants of the people...once elected, they think they are masters of people for the next 5 years...this need to stop Immediately...that's why APE(sorry AAP) party is better than CONgress, BJP and other political parties...
