New Delhi, Feb 27 (IANS): The Tihar jail authorities have suspended 17 officials in connection with various cases of irregularities in 2013, an official said Thursday.

Director General of Prisons Vimlaa Mehra said 17 jail officials were suspended after their names surfaced in various cases.

The jail authorities were also holding departmental enquiries against 58 others, she added.

"We are trying to maintain transparency in our work," she said.

Mehra said she will not tolerate corruption inside the jail premises and will take strong action against people involved in such malpractice.

The jail has received 47 complaints from the National Human Right Commission in 2013 regarding various irregularities taking place inside the prison.
