Mid-air Holi dance cost SpiceJet heavily; two pilots suspended

New Delhi, Mar 20 (Agencies): Mid-air Holi celebrations aboard eight flights have cost no-frill carrier SpiceJet heavily, with the DGCA issuing show cause notice to the airline and suspending two of its pilots.

Sources said that on Monday, the cabin crew of SpiceJet performed a small dance sequence on a song as part of Holi celebrations, with some passengers also joining in.

The videos of these events were taken and uploaded on video-sharing website YouTube and other social media.

In one video, a pilot is seen coming out of the cockpit and taking photographs of the celebrations at the front of the aisle.

Official sources said the act constituted violation of all safety norms and two pilots were suspended.

SpiceJet on March 17 ran eight special flights with extra cabin crew onboard to do a 2.5-minute jig on the occasion of Holi.

The airline said it was looking into the issue in cooperation with the DGCA.

It defended itself saying that the cockpit was manned all the time.

"The cockpit was manned at all time as per DGCA regulations that govern the situation when one pilot is outside for example to use the lavatory," an airline spokesperson told reporters.

"The dance was professionally choreographed and was Holi delight for passengers much like it is done by several airlines around the world to celebrate a special occasion. The entire dance sequence lasted 2.5 minutes," the spokesperson said.

Poor professionalism.keep such dirty things away from flight.it can cause safety problems.some set of standards must be followed to keep flight journey different from the local train journey

I think there was some problem. The flight might have not tilting downwards for landing. That's why Pilots came out from the cockpit and gave a call to passengers to join them for Holi dance. As soon as people gathered front side of the flight, due to weight flight tilted downwards and safely landed.

This is insane. If the DGCA had to treat Air India with the same yardstick the airline would have closed down a long time ago.
However, as we all know, at taxpayer expense, Air India can do no wrong!

No doubt it looks well organized dance, but any air turbulences would have made the dance still better.

This is called the height of stupidity.

We have not come out from the shock of missing Malaysian airline with 240 passengers, the dance performance on board a flight would definitely cause putting the life of passengers at risk.

The pilots and cabin crew should be dismissed (just suspension not enough) and simultaneously their flying licences should be cancelled. This would send a message to the fraternity of pilots and stewards.

That is why it is called SPICE jet. They tried to add spice during the trip. Unfortunately, it was too spicy.
DGCA can look into a number of more important issues. For example, Jet Airways is regularly showing in 70 passengers into one shuttle bus from terminal to aircraft. The aircraft seats have broken food trays and non-functioning entertainment system. The crew does not collect the empties till last moment (with an excuse that serving is still not over). This is to make sure that they do not use the toilets which of course are dirty and not sufficient for the passengers. The gap between the seats is not enough even for a 5 1/2 ft person, leave alone the 6 feeters. The weighing scales are manipulated to show 3 to 4 kilos higher weight so that passengers are forced to pay for extra luggage. All this is happening mostly in flights to middle east because, a lot of the poorer class of people use these flights and they do not question.

Let DGCA look into these points first before going after silly things.

What a stupidity! Crew alone, I can understand, but the passengers too? This is a DISASTER!

Why not disco lights be provisioned in the aircraft esp. for INDIAN flights?

All your entertainment/celebration/enjoyment is o.k. without disturbing your co-passenger, but keep in mind safety measures and passenger privacy, later it would not be a tragedy occasion.

I was flying from Mangalore to Dubai on Jet Airways. About 12 year boy was running from Back of the flight to front and coming back. But neither Air crew or Boys parents try to stop him. It seems he was playing during the flight from Mangalore. They were not thinking of disturbance to other passengers. Now the Airlines are not thinking that it is a travel object, but it is a dance floor or playing ground.

As long as there was no objection from the passengers and no splashing of colours it was fine. I am sure SpiceJet had good intention of entertaining the passengers without compromising on security. May be the pilot should not have come out of the cockpit to click the photographs.

Dear Fredrick, imagine if some passengers in an emotional outburst had gone jolly along with them what would have happened and who was to be blamed?

Even though it is a matter of great concern from the safety point of view, it is not that it has no precedents!!

The best and most famous was the Finnish Air celebration on India's Republic day in 2012!!

It is better such incidents should be strictly banned in the interest of passenger safety!!
