Woman immolates herself in Gurgaon

Gurgaon, May 16 (IANS): A young woman in her early 20s died after she set herself on fire here Friday, police said.

"The young girl was faltering, it seemed that she was under the influence of some drug," an eyewitness said.

"Carrying a plastic bottle in her hand, she came from Sukhrali market around 12 p.m. and approached Signature Tower (Rao Tula Ram Chowk) on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway," he added.

The woman poured the liquid in the bottle on herself near the gate of a management college here and set herself on fire.

"The guard at the gate and some other people including a traffic policeman, who were near the spot, did not try to help her. The policeman simply informed the police control room about the incident and moved from there," said another person who witnessed the scene but did not wish to be named.

The body remained at the spot for nearly two hours.

"The inflammable liquid in the bottle may be kerosene. We are examining it. The victim got hundred percent burn injuries on the body and died on the spot," a forensics department official told IANS.

Bijender Singh, chief of sector 17-18 police station, said "We are investigating the statement of the eyewitnesses. The deceased was under the influence of some drug or she had consumed some poisonous substance, it will be clear after the post-mortem."

"We are trying to establish the identity of the deceased woman and the reason for her extreme step," he said.

He added that the deceased was not a student of the institute.
