Is it the end of road for Congress?

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network

May 18: As soon as the electoral results started pouring in giving a whopping mandate to the Narendra Modi led BJP, social media got active coming out with some of the most wittiest and creative comments and visuals. Needless to say most of the comments were against the mother- son duo Sonia and Rahul and the Congress party. One such harmless visual I received on my Whatsapp is the obituary of the ‘hand’ symbol of the Congress party. By winning 44 seats, which is its worst ever show, the Congress is totally mauled and almost annihilated by 'Modi'fied India.

Naturally there is a question mark on whether the Congress will be able to come out from the present moribund state and regain its past glory. Or is it the end of the road to the party which has a glorious history of 129 years? That is why the picture of the unceremonious death given to the Congress symbol assumes significance.

Can we really term it as the untimely death of the Congress party or has it outlived its existence and its death was long overdue? It is a very pertinent question that needs to be asked by all the right thinking people. Soon after India’s independence Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi had suggested dissolving the Congress as he felt that the major goal of the Congress was achieving the independence of the country. Once that was achieved he felt it was time to dissolve the Congress and form a new party to serve the people. But it did not happen because they had tasted power and were reluctant to part with it.

Congressmen often remember Mahatma Gandhi when it suits them the most especially during the elections especially when they blamed the BJP for his assassination. Mahatma Gandhi gave this suggestion of dissolving the Congress even before dynastic succession had become a part of the Congress and before the Gandhi name had become synonymous with the Congress. The party conveniently forgot to heed to his suggestions given by Gandhi way back in 1947 to dissolve the party. In fact Modi had talked about this very topic during his election rallies in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

In the absence of the Gandhi family failing to provide a strong leadership and the compulsions of coalition politics paving way for corruption, there were warning bells for the Congress loud and clear that it was losing ground. When veteran Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee was placated with the ceremonial post of the President last year, it sent clear signals that the party was clearing the ground for Rahul Gandhi to take over the reins of the Congress. It is now an open secret how Rahul Gandhi hastened the demise of the party with his insipid leadership and lack of political acumen.

There is now a shrill cry in the Congress party to make Rahul the sacrificial goat and bring Priyanka Vadra to the forefront. Congressmen can never live with the idea of being out of power and now they believe their survival depends on Rahul Gandhi making way for his sister Priyanka Vadra. The Congressmen naturally want to hang in to the last thread of hope in their bid to hold on to power and they do see a ray of hope in Priyanka. Cotton sari-clad Priyanka with a strong resemblance to her grandmother Indira Gandhi makes a very good visual image for the cameras. She is more charismatic and that was one of the reasons the media went gaga when she started retorting to Modi during the recent campaign.

Despite the media going euphoric and apart from her resemblance to Indira Gandhi, there is nothing that really warrants so much media attention on Priyanka. Her retorts to Modi were very mundane and were more of an emotional outbursts talking about the sacrifice made by the Gandhi family. It is an irony that she chose to come out once in five years that too only to seek votes during elections.

Public memory is not so short that they can forget Priyanka’s failure to react or apologize to Robert Vadra’s atrocious comment calling Indians “Mango people in banana republic”. Some Congress leaders are singing paeans about her calling her charismatic, pragmatic, street-smart and shrewd. But so far people haven’t got a glimpse of these traits of Priyanka Gandhi except for her 'snoopgate retort' on Modi , that failed to create any political ripples.

Now that the Congress party is ready for some serious introspection, there is going to be a major overhaul and some heads are going to roll. One wonders whether the Gandhis who have owned the responsibility for the party’s debacle, are ready to step down and thus end the dynastic rule of the party. This is unlikely because it is the Gandhi dynasty that has put holds to the aspirations of greedy Congressmen. If at all such a situation emerges, infighting within the Congress for the top post would hasten its demise. Now it is the Gandhi family which keeps it on the ventilator. Either way, Congress, the grand old party of India, is finding itself between devil and the deep sea.

Congress has done a blunder by ignoring Social Media. Now they should be active on it. BJP people who had insulted and abused MMS, now saying Don't say anything bad about Modi,he is a PM.Congress should do Tit for Tat.

Congress allowed too much flak on MMS and did not retaliate early on. UPA should have protected the PM instead allowing the people to absorb what BJP through Modi was lambasting\making fun about MMS. That was the greatest mistake Congress\UPA did which led to the utter\disappoiting results in this LS election.
Now Congress should revamp\refurbish the party and inject new and young blood to vigorously work from Panchayat level to top level. In my opinion they should do away with Rahul who is utterly disappointing and has no knowledge when to say what and when to do what.
There are five more years for Congress to urgently infuse new, dynamic, sensible, vocal, middle aged\youth leaders into the party throwing out all jokers. They should be touring length and breadth of India with their new energetic ideas for India to be always on top, locally and internationally. They should not keep on harping on the present governments mistakes but give solutions.
If they do not do this then it is curtains for Congress and wait like a buzzard to have it's share until the existing Government falls on its own!!!
BjP's strategy through Modi for the people of India to be with them through rallies and media for the last few months before the LS election, did the trick. They made everyone to focus on them throughout and UPA and others sounded like a small pack of wolves howling from far away in the wilderness.

Wake up - you have five long years to rejuvenate your Congress party and the present Government may help you prop you up with their blunders during their governance.

Congs has to change something in there working style, they should not be depending more on Ghandi.
And Rahul has to come up and be active in politics, with this current attitude Cong's can't get majority in next election also.
And i do believe Modi is intelligent enough to know what exactly middle class people want, so he will lead in positive direction for sure.

Its about time that Congress starts moving away from the Gandhi family. While i personally felt that Sonia had leadership qualities, her low I.Q, thumb sucking son is a thorough failure and disappointment.

Priyanka too might turn out to be a damp squib sooner or later She argues or debates like an immature high school girl and has no leadership qualities.

Its a shame that when there are smart people like Kamal Nath, Shashi Tharoor etc. the congress party has to bank on Rahul who has no interest in politics. He is better off holidaying in Europe with his pals and gals.

Congress lost primarily because of the corruption taint. People all over india thought, when they are going through price rise, no jobs, bad roads etc. the UPA govt is not bothered except for making money through 2G,CWG, Coal gate etc. Secondly, people watched with amazement, hijacked parliment not working and govt watching helplessly. Thirdly, they were mute and added to that they placed Rahul in top spot, who is a weak communicator. Fourthly, BJP banked on every technology to connect and mobilizing RSS cadre very efficiently. Fifth congress had one of the pathetic poll strategists. This is the reason why congress lost.

Can congress bounce back? It depends on the strategy, plan and ution. If congress plays the traditional reactive ways from every block level to high command, it will never raise again. Even if, BJP won't do any good for another year, still it has the capability to claim and convince normal people, they have achieved better than congress in 60years.

Vote percentage is not at all bad and in fact more then 140 seats congress has lost by a margin of less then 10k votes with little structural changes they can bounce back. Elections at all levels should happen within the party and CM'S and DCC members should be empowered more not controlled from Delhi by a handful of people ..

"There is now a shrill cry in the "Congress party to make Rahul the sacrificial goat and bring Priyanka Vadra to the forefront."
    Unquote...
Now if you project a 'Goat' that bleats like it has no balls at the outset as your 'Campaign Head' or something, what is there to sacrifice? Left out hairs or wool?
The way he was talking, his postures, body language was a give away that he was a complete misfit. Nothing personal against Rahulji but in Indian politics this just would not do.You have to be more 'mature' and able to 'connect'. Compare it with speeches of Modiji and many many had predicted the out come a long time ago.Congress was simply clutching to straws saying that previous exit polls had gone wrong, secular party and all other nonsensical statistics of development which did not go down well with the common man.
As far as 'end of the road' is concerned if the party does not take drastic steps, have a new agenda, indulges only in 'window dressing', projects the same oldies again and again then same may be the case.
If the BJP does at the Center what it did in Karnataka the Congress may still have a chance! Looks unlikely though and the wait for the Congress may be longer. It might have to dig in and wait for more time from the look of things at present.

CONGRESS ESPECIALLY HOME MINISTER SHINDE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAUTIOUS WHILE FAVOURING SOME MINORITY CRIMINALS FOR VOTE BANK.

ON THE OTHER HAND NOW IT IS THE TURN OF MODI TO MODIFY INDIA AND TO TAKE VOTERS CONFIDENCE IN A BETTER DIGNIFIED WAY WHEREBY NOT EYING MERELY ON VOTE BANK BUT TO TREAT ALL COMMUNITIES AS ONLY INDIANS.

From last 65 years, now and then Congress Party has ruled India wisely likewise Congress has fooled Indians and they have fooled themselves...

Nehru had proper vision of India, however after Chinese invasion of India, he was convinced that Soviet Union closeness would be a proper strategy. However, Shastri's death in Tashkent, death of Firoz Gandhi- Indira's husband, Indira's friendship treaty with Soviet Union, which led to Emergency rule and imprisonment of all opposition, a clear drift away from west gave previous worst defeat to Congress party in 1977.

Indira bounced back into power, with more political enemies nationally and internationally. The worst mistake was with Sikh faith. As the Soviet Union fell apart in 1989-1990 the only thing came to my mind was that Indira Gandhi wasted India's resources to appease her political allay, and put India's overall progress by at least by 50 years. Younger generation still pays dues for this unholy political relationship of Mrs. Gandhi. Her son was a victim of her foreign policy of Sri Lanka-Tamil.

Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi did very well with Sikhs, specially nomination of Mr. M.M.Singh for the top position. Many think this is political PAY-BACK to Sikh community by Congress party.

India needs a national party as alternative. I always thought that it would be Congress and Jana Sangh (now BJP)are these parties. India would have been much better state if Jana Sangh (BJP) had won absolute majority by 1970.

I expect with in next 6-8 years Congress will form government at center. Notable factor is about 34% of Indians are below the age of 30. As this generation, born with technology in their hand, and are better informed of the day to day world affairs India may loose all regional parties and may left with three national parties. This will be very positive for Indians and India's Democracy.

You don't understand Indian politics and democracy. I pity for your knowledge about India.

Number for votes is required to decide the MP in a constituency. The number of MPs decides the party to form the govt. Ambedkar made it so because he wanted the politics to be localized and locals problems solved first.

If you go by your logic, Karnataka BJP and Congress has not much difference in terms of votes. But we have accepted the defeat gracefully an year back and worked hard after that. But you seems to be behind blind facts.

Now onwards congress cant expect any good news. Like Gujarat, congress will be wiped out from India.

On lighter note: Congress can expect good news from only two people, 1. N.D.Tiwari, 2. Digvijay Singh (very much doubtful, only possible by outside support)

I have noticed one very interesting thing during 2014 election. Whatever Modi said turned true. Like he said Congress will reduce less than 100, many states congress cant open account, in no state congres will get double digit seat, this will be congress worst performance, this will be BJPs best performance.
He also said Congress mukth Bharath, I am sure this will also come true.

Another interesting thing, during 2014 election. Whatever Ismail Perinje said turned ulta. Now he is telling Congress will not collapse. I am sure now congress is a gone case.

Rahul Gandhi was forced to take ministerial berth sevral times in UPA-2. But he rejected to take any post.

The truth is bitter. He does not want to take responsibility of any kind. His goal in life is only ENJOYING with ..... and .....

Diggi told before election result out was "CONGRESS WILL BOUNCE BACK" in fact he knw that Congress can not make it to the treasury bench.Certainly Congress will bounce back and wait and watch Modi can not control all those fox politicians together. He controlled Gujarat but controlling Center is different ball game.Already Karnataka alone Five stalwarts are camping in Delhi for Ministerial berth. The main road block under the circumstances is Modi neither ignore LKA nor accommodate him !!Debacle of Congress is unprecedented over the course of time it will bounce back with a bang.Writing off congress for a debacle is utter foolishness and it still accommodates all sections of the society which BJP can not..This point of time Congress should introspect what is wrong in it to stoop that level which was unprecedented humiliating drubbing.

Congress's election planning,Modi's projection well in advance, fail to counter Modimania and underestimating paid media made Congress to fare dismal in just concluded LS election. There is no leadership crisis and Should Rahul had given important portfolio in UPA2 the picture could had different.

    Dear Ismail
In terms if benefit fir the BJP we want the party remote with the dynasty itself so that it will help us in future also.

You are talking about giving some power to pappu in UPA 2 ??? Hahahah what portfolio ? Animal husbandry ? Or horticulture ? The only role fits into is eating a TOFFE and flying Ballons. That's all. And where is that sister of his who gave a great hope to congis last week of election as if she will turn the tables .??? Every time Rahul opened mouth BJP gained 5000 votes. Every time Priyanka opened mouth, BJP gained 10000 votes. Yet they r not ready to resign? Shame on them. It's ik go on continuing them. We are fine as far as it is benifiitting us. Our only problem is that since we believe in democracy uhintendedly we gave you such a rout that we don't have a able opposition in the house. This is not good. We request you atleast for now make alliance with some guys and take your figure to 55 so that you can have some opposition as Modi is set to take oath.

There are some good leaders in Congress, they should be given power and whole congress policy to be changed and you should try at least to be a constructive opposition,I am worried that there will not be any opp leader who can stop our PM Modi.If all good leaders join AAP and develop the party may after 5 years AAP can be good opp party.Ruling India again by Congress just forget. Our N.Modi will take India to the developed Nation list in 10 Years,so sit and relax

Congress has ruled our nation for last ten years and yes they will bounce back. The anti incumbency factor coupled with price rise inflation lack of projection of their achievements led to their downfall. The decontrol of petroleum products and the resultant price rise of all commodities was inescapable as the burden of subsidies was sky rocketing. The Congress needs to develop dynamic leadership in all states like late YSR in Andra. May be Rahul with all the exposure in these elections and with time will be able to mature into a seasoned and shrewed politician. No harm in inducting Priyanka if her entry galvanizes the rank and file of the congress party.

Good article about congress, Gandhi (Nehru) family never alowed anyone to grow above their dynasty. Kasu Bramananda reddy, Nijalingappa, Devarju Arasu, Rajesh pilot, Sitaram Kesary many pepople crushed by them to hold their command to rule India. Congress from bullack cart, cow & calf and finally ended with Hand symbol in Indian politics.Among all Indira Gandhi given stable government she ruled comparatively better but her dictatorship personality once defeated her. Congress leaders following Gandhi family as slaves whoever raised critics sidelined like Prana Mukharji.First of all Indian National Congress started by A.O. Hume & Dr. Annibesent 1n 1885. Mahatma Gandhi was right in his decision to abolish Congress after the independance but they sticked into power claiming they brought independence to the country. Indira Gandhi was capable in deviding the opposition parties and enjoyed power quite long. She divided communist and other parties managed her political game nicely. The generation had gratitude towards freedom struggle of congress almost vanished away and the new generation realized how congress fooled indian voters on basis of fake secularism and creating fear on minorities to mantain their vote bank. The result is congress reached its age factor. The way they treated anti corruption agitation in Delhi is classic example. However we need one strong opposition party in the country to couter BJP and for the good governanace and to retain democratic, secular fabric of this great Nation. Let us wait and watch how the new Government (BJP) rules this country with the justification to one and all respecting the mandate to rule. I wish congress perform good as opposition party and rewamp its structure with dynamic leadership for the benifit of this country.

Congress has no representative in Lok Sabha in 10 states. Hardly I Can recollect Six states where they hold the power. There is not single State level leader who commands respect and who can advice the so called high command. With this set up is there any chance of regaining the hold on power. BJP had four powerful Chief Minister who had a great say in running the party. Everybody was equal in stature. Though there were highly respected old leaders their contribution was only namesake. Young new generation of leaders have led BJP to this stage. Unfortunately Congress is tied to the apron strings of Gandhi and Nehru family, who hardly knows the ground reality

Any dilution of their development talk will land them in untouchable category. Indian voter is unforgiving. He can bring back any party to power and throw any party to dustbin when angry. Lesson for all parties is Never Take Indian voter For Granted. After 10 years of rule the time for introspection is well deserved for Congress Party.
