A wrong Facebook 'Like' can get you in trouble in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jun 9 (PTI) : With objectionable posts on social networking sites triggering violence over the past week, the Maharashtra government is mulling action against not only those who upload them but also against those who "like" and forward them, state's Home Minister R R Patil said today.

The move follows the killing of an information technology professional Mohsin Shaikh in Pune last Monday after derogatory pictures of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji and Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray were uploaded by unknown people on Facebook.

Activists of a little known radical group Hindu Rashtra Sena bludgeoned Shaikh to death as Pune was gripped by violence for two days. There was trouble again in Pune, Nashik and Kolhapur last night after posts with derogatory references to B R Ambedkar were uploaded on Facebook.

Angry locals allegedly belonging to a political party vandalised state-run buses in these places.

"Social media is used all over the world. It is used for good purposes but anti-social elements are using it for evil purposes as seen from recent incidents in Maharashtra," Patil said.

"Those who "like" and forward objectionable content are in a way siding with the culprits and in the next few days, you will see stringent action taken against them," he said, adding, "People are reacting to the content on social media. It is seen that social media is being misused extensively."

"No one can say that somebody else has misued his or her mobile as the responsibility is of the owner of the mobile," he said.

He also said the government would see if there was a need for a separate legislation to prevent such misuse of the social media.

Patil termed as "rumour" media reports that the Centre has "rejected" Maharashtra government's report on the killing of Mohsin Shaikh. "These are rumours...our report has not been rejected by the Centre," he said.

"Mohsin was inncocent. He had nothing to do with this (the objectionable posts)," the Minister said.

Meanwhile, senior Congress minister Naseem Khan has demanded a ban on the outfit to which the killers of the 28-year-old software professional belonged.

Nineteen Hindu Rashtra Sena activists have so far been arrested in connection with Shaikh's murder.

First punish those hundreds of goondas arrested in PUNE. All other things will follow automatically. Prove your WILL to punish the guilty. Barking dogs do not bite. Action against web comments is secondary, take care of the goondas on the roads first.

Yogesh, Bombay is no more. it is mumbai now.. The Maratha Empire was founded by Chhatrapati Shivaji in 1674. The name of the empire today is preserved in the Indian state of Maharashtra, which was created in 1960 as a Marathi-speaking state. That means it was Maratha till 1960 even British didn’t change the name. If Marathi speaking people give respect to Chhatrapati Shivaji why they changed name from Maratha to Maharashtra???

Fire and Knife can used in Kitchen for cooking and cutting food. But in the same time it can be used for Killing and burning/destroying by the anti-social element. Just because it is in wrong hands can anybody ban using Fire and Knife? If there are good people in society there will be bad people also. Banning is not the solutions. If persons are killed, take action against Murderers. Couple of Dozens Innocent people die daily in India, in the Traffic, because of some of Drivers drive careless, reckless and in violation of traffic rules. Can you ban all the Motor Vehicles plying on the road? Take corrective action for the society and try to reduce crimes.

..thank God its Congress Govt, otherwise it would have been different story..freedom of speech,minority/majority blah blah..here we all agree for Govt action even if we press like button on derogatory contents..but few days back when karnataka & GOA police questions some students on uploading content on MODI,our opinion was different!!..unless we treat crime as crime nothing will change..even though Maha Congress action looks ridiculous it may deter people doing mischievous..

All media's should have some control, even live TV's people abusing each other, giving bad images of some people. Media should be neutral and not bias.

Communal outfits are proactive now a days and reason is quite clear that 'it is writing on the wall'....

Sane people are not harming the emotions of civilized society. If people who are purposefully uploading contents to incite communal disharmony or to tarnish one's image they should dealt with iron hand along with those who supports.

This seems to be a well-planned campaign..otherwise how will these pictures be circulated on social media... FB and WA are responsible as they spread such unnecessary and derogatory pictures over their network in the name of freedom of speech. Its high time both these companies and also the people who used the network to be booked under the strictest law in the country.. Guess the Chinese are really smart. They have banned Facebook
