Mangalore, Jun 16: Mangalore International Airport has been put on high alert following information from the Central Intelligence Bureau about a possible terror attack on the airport.
The Intelligence Bureau has reportedly said that terrorists have plotted to attack the airport, and they might carry out their plan at any time.
Following the alert, security has been beefed up at the airport and also in the surrounding areas.
The alert has been issued in all airports across the country in the wake of terror attacks on Karachi airport in Pakistan. As the coastal Karnataka region has been known to have terror links in the past, the CISF at Mangalore airport has formed 'Kshipra' team to prevent as well as counter any attack.
In the southern region, airports in Mangalore, Kochi and Kozhikode have identified as 'sensitive' and more focus has laid on strengthening security in these airports.
So far, there were 150 personnel of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) guarding the Mangalore airport, but now 60 more personnel have been deployed.
A special meeting was called to discuss security measures at Mangalore airport, and it was decided to form three teams to keep a close watch on the airport and surrounding areas round the clock. A separate team has been deployed at the entrance of the airport to check passengers and people coming into the airport. Security has also been beefed up at all four sides, and so also around the runway and border areas of the airport, sources said.
